Glowstone
Keep this close while you sleep child, and the light will keep the dark dreams away.

Mechanics & Inner Workings
A glowstone is a stone that has been covered with a coat of paint made from luminous quartz. The yellow paint gives the stone a soft glow that gives off a faint light, while the glow from the white paint is stronger and reaches farther.
Manufacturing process
Manufacturing the glowstone is a simple process that nearly anyone can accomplish. A coat of paint made from luminous quartz is used on the stone, covering it completely.
Significance
This item is quite useful to anyone who uses light. While not as bright as a torch, it is not something that can only be used for a limited amount of time. It is quite commonly used as a light in houses, and children who might fear the dark find it quite comforting and not too bright so that they can easily sleep. The usual glowstone does not give off enough light to be helpful in large areas or for seeing far, although using multiple ones can help with this. It's also a practical way for scholars and arcane spellcasters who might wish to study after dark, giving off more light than a candle and preventing eye strain.
If one should wish to invest more money, one can occasionally find glowstones covered in paint from white luminous quartz. These stones can light up an area five times larger than a normal glowstone of the same size. There is more danger of eye strain from this, however.
