The Litany of Laws

One of the most impactful things that the devils brought to Bastarre upon taking hold was their enthusiasm for rules and laws. The draconian laws that were put into place have been nothing short of oppression, and punishment is always quick and severe. As most laws do, these affect the less fortunate more than those with wealth, and since many of these people are unable to read, it is more difficult for them to know what new laws have been put into effect.    Those with wealth and power are quite adept at gaming the system, and far too many people have been ambushed by the tactics of those who took a dislike to them. Even worse, there are those who have made it a kind of game, playing with the lives of others for no other reason than amusement.     -Maradeja Bidingsun, Bard of the Royal Elven Court of Silvermoon Forest

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to make clear the laws of each country and city so that there is no question as to what the duties of a citizen or visitor are.

Historical Details

History

It was only a short time after the initial attacks took place upon the invasion that devils began to choose the areas in which individual archdevils would hold sway. During the time of this choosing, it was a general consensus that certain laws would be universal, and must be codified and written down for all to see. Each government would then choose other laws to add of their own relevant to what they felt important. However, the original litany is that which was chiseled out by the archdevils, and this is always placed throughout each settlement, with occasional copies being circulated when the government feels that citizens need to be reminded.

Public Reaction

The public reacts to these laws with resigned acceptance, knowing that there is little they can do about it and fearing the punishment of rebelling.

Term

The litany is a permanent list of the laws, although on occasion laws will be added or amended, as the lawmakers, and especially the Lord of Law, see fit.
