The Gamel
The forty-seat legislature, with each individual seat within the Gamel filled by a single provincial official known as a Campagnard (pronounced ‘cam-pan-yard’), an elected representative for the constituents of their province. Among these forty delegates, one holds the position of Grand Campagnard. This person is the highest-ranking elected official in Bastollo. They head proceedings of the Gamel, and act as Bastollo’s representative on the international stage.
Within the Gamel, there are large political coalitions known as caucuses, who unite along lines of shared political interest to draft, debate, and implement legislation that impacts the lives of Bastollan citizens. This usually boils down to the larger caucus forcing through whichever piece of legislation suits their political agenda best.
The caucuses also decide the Grand Campagnard. If a caucus doesn’t currently hold majority powers, they hold an internal election to determine who their caucus leader will be at the start of the next election cycle. If this caucus leader wins the next election cycle (ie. more Campagnards associated with the caucus are elected than those with ties to other caucuses), then they can elect their caucus leader to the position of Grand Campagnard, a decision which is always the first vote of the Gamel after every election.
There are two major caucuses in the Gamelhouse at the moment. They are the Elder Caucus and the Sable Caucus.
