Lomall Deigh

Lomall Deigh is a remote settlement of the Deign Sgàile situated on the icy Dawnward coastline of Oir. As with any settlement on the edge of civilisation (and in this case near the edge of the world) living is often little more than subsiding; however, the hot springs which rise 10km to the Crown of Lomall Deigh creates a small oasis of warmth and growth in an otherwise extremely hostile environment. Not only does this bring many animals to the area, drawn by the warmth and easily accessible water and food, but also provides a small amount of fertile land to be farmed. Deign Sgàile are hunters to their core, but the addition of cultivated and easily harvested grain and vegetables raises their existence here out of the purely subsistence and provides a small comforting blanket of luxury. Breads, beer, spirits and vegetables would otherwise be in extremely short supply and only available at exorbitant price from the infequent visits by roving traders doing business in the snowy wastes of Oir.   As a village Lomall Deigh is notable from other settlements of the Deign Sgàile; primarily due to the hot springs but also as it has become common practice to take the pups of White Wolves and raise them as hunting companions. The wolves are almost treated as equals and are trained to flush out game into the path of waiting hunters, this practice has made them extremely efficient group hunters.

Demographics

Almost fully an orcish settlement, however, over the years explorers, merchants, travellers have washed up on the coastline and been saved. Whatever mishap befell them, they undoubtedly owe their lives to the kindness of the peoples here; all were grateful and some stayed and made a new life here. As such at any given time there may be one or two individuals of other species and through time an increasing percentage of half orcs are being born.

Government

Council of elders headed by a tribal chieftan.

Defences

A simple palisade wall with an outer ditch encircles the landward side of the village; this is only to protect and deter the occasional monsterous visitor. There is no defence from the sea.

Natural Resources

There are a wide variety of resources to be exploited that brought such a remote settlement into being.
  • Timber a wide range of deciduous and coniferous trees provide timber for building, fuel (essential in the freezing climate) and habitat for hunting.
  • Hunting the surrounding forest is teeming with life, despite the conditions, and mostly due to the present of the springs. For local hunters prey is most notibly; carribou; deer; hares; boar; phesants; and turkey. The pelts of cave bears and owlbears are also highly prized.
  • Fishing both river and sea provide a bounty of fish; salmon and trout in the rivers, with cod and haddock being amongst the most prized fish.
  • Whaling once per year huge schools of pilot whales traverse the waters of Lomall Deigh and all able bodied adults set off to join the hunt. Fat for waterproofing, oil for lamps and a source of protein rich meat.
