Haggan the Turtle God

Jan was drawn to this Alabama beach. She wondered if her spirit knew she needed a little break or if there was another reason. Walking along the beach, enjoying a fresh smoothie from the local snack shack she soaked in the sight of the setting sun over the water. Enjoyed the warm air as it breezed through her hair and across her skin. In a little cluster of palm trees she saw a stone or concrete turtle statue. It was worn and dirty from years of being on the beach. The face and designs on the shell seemed so intricate and beautiful however. The artist who carved this must have been extremely skilled, she thought. The next morning after her run she bought a little bucket, scrubbie sponge and soap from the small market close to her hotel. She thought it was a shame the statue was so filthy that people couldn't enjoy the finer details the artist created. She wanted to clean it up. She scooped up some sea water and got to work. It was slow going, but she had time. No where pressing to be. She was able to meditate as she worked and it calmed her spirit.   She knew people passing by were curious about the strange woman cleaning the statue. She didn't care. She worked for a few hours in the morning then went to grab food and relaxation. In the evening she found herself wandering over in that direction again. She saw an older man sitting next to the statue running his hand along it's back, talking softly to it. She gave him space. Jan got back to work on the statue the next morning as it needed a lot of care. She decided to copy the old man and softly speak to the statue, introducing herself to it. "My name is Jan and I am your caretaker for the week." she said. She felt a little silly but continued on anyways. "I am someone who travels the US looking for wrongs to right." Simplest way she has found to explain her line of work. She was so focused on the fine lines in the face that she failed to notice the old man she saw last night approach her. "My name is Traaga." He said. "You are speaking to my wife, my mate, Nagoi. She was turned into this statue by an evil mage over a century ago. If what you say is true, can you help her?" Jan was surprised and agreed to try.   Over the course of several days, they cleaned up the statue. While she worked, she focused her healing energies into the statue. Traaga told her of his people, Sea Turtle folk who can shift from human to turtle at will. In the evening he told her of Haggan, the Sea Turtle God who marches the skies and guides their people to safer waters. He pointed out the constellation of Haggan overhead and said that he must have brought Jan to this beach to help them. On the evening of the seventh day, the Haggan constellation was at it's zenith. Jan felt a pulse of her magic as she was touching Nagoi's rock form. She grabbed Traaga's hand and placed it on his mate's head. She focused her energy though his hand and into Nagoi and willed her to come back to living form again. The statue dimly glowed and with tears in his eyes, Traaga kissed the head of his mate. Where his lips touched, stone cracked. Light erupted from the cracks and they grew even larger, longer. Soon Jan and Traaga were blinded. When the light faded, the very real and living sea turtle stood before them. Traaga let out an exited gasp and threw his arms around her neck. She changed form and Jan could see the older couple hugging and crying in human form. Long lost love reunited at last. Traaga thanked Jan and gave her a hug before stripping off his clothes. The couple both ran to towards the water as they changed into sea turtle form. Jan looked up at the turtle in the sky and smiled. Her heart felt full and she knew that Haggan was happy this couple was whole again.
