Clockwork Typewriter

Clockwork Typewriters are the result of a House Orior scribe who became very frustrated at the seemingly endless amount of times he had to rewrite some of the more basic scrolls. He sought out the aid of a gnomish artificer that was sometimes employed by the house who specialized in clockwork automatons. After many attempts, they finally managed to create the first Clockwork Typewriter and presented it to the Lady of the house at the time. She was amused by the idea and gave it her blessing to be produced by House Orior for their own use, she doubted many outside the house would find a use for such a thing.   In the years following the interest in these creations has spread, but most lack the finances to spend on such a device, let alone one the people who can properly maintain or repair such a device should something break. Mages remain the most common customer of these devices, generally those who are instructing a large volume of students.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

A clockwork core provides the power and ability to function as a typewriter, after that the entire machine is animated. The 'brain' of the typewriter is the hardest part, a heartstone of some kind must be placed within the typewriter, most of these cores are etched with the letters of the language: Common, but others can have different languages. Truly rare and expensive versions have multiple languages on their heartstone.

Significance

These typewriters are very important to the world although many overlook just how important. They possess the ability to be dictated to and will type what is said, but once they are complete they can be instructed to reproduce what was said again and again. The typewriter has limited memory and can only hold onto information for up to a month, and only up to 500 pages worth of mundane text. Which can produce many copies of important volumes, the main problem is the larger issue of a lack of literacy among many of the common folk.   They are able to, in limited fashion reproduce most of the work on a spell scroll. The words for the incantations can be typed out rather quickly but the mage must still finish the process by imparting the spell into the scroll as well as any drawings or finishing touches beyond the ability of the typewriter. Those who make many scrolls enjoy this feature as it does reduce the time to create a scroll by half, though the ink cost remains the same.
