The Awakening
When a sorcerer who is fortunate enough to be born into the Draz Tyran or a Scorathi affiliated family they have the best start to their magical life compared to others. When the first spark of magic is determined in a child they are guided by others who understand them. Rather than being left to their own devices and even persecuted for their special powers they are guided along the path to understanding themselves. The final part of this teaching is also the first large step into their new life, when they under go the Awakening.
To undertake the Awakening is not an easy feat as it takes true dedication to understanding themselves, it requires the sorcerer to step into a pool of a colorless liquid metal that looks and behaves like mercury but is a special type of magically infused metal that remains in the liquid state when in a place of strong Arcane energy. The only other contact they have is a person who observes the ritual at the start who will say only: “To grow into your true self you must meditate on the nature of what you are.” Then guide them into the pool. Once they enter into the liquid, they will find themselves unable to swim and drawn into the very center of the mass, the officiant will leave the room as the sorcerer is being pulled in and not stop the ritual even if they ask for it to end, they will only give one last word of advice, “Look within for answers.”
How long the sorcerer spends within this liquid depends on each case but while they are within the metal it is seeping into them. This is a physical representation of what they have been taught and makes them must turn teaching into practice. If the character fears drowning then they will suffer it, only to wake up later still within the liquid still very much alive. The major determining factor on how long the sorcerer will be within the ritual depends on how well they can bond with their Muldraz/Terrorgheist by understanding its and their own nature. The ritual has only ever gone on for five days and as each day passes the metal will change color, those who leave the liquid after their time within are marked by a different color by the is liquid metal in the form of intricate and unique tattoos known as the Arcakreen that have blended into the being so deeply they would even appear should the soul be separated from the body.
During the ritual they will be faced with images of their Muldraz still mostly unformed unaware of what it is having not yet made the transformation into a Terrorgheist, so long as this ritual is done in the youth of the character. Should they wait it might be a Terrorgheist and prove far more difficult. Each day has certain criteria the character must be able to meet or the ritual ends. To make it to day 2 for example you must be able to perceive your Muldraz, Day 3 would require communicating with it, Day 4 and 5 would take greater examples of understanding.
The ritual can be undertaken multiple times, but you must prove you deserve the chance. That your understanding has changed enough to be worth it. This must be granted by one of the masters who oversees the ritual as well as from the Muldraz/Terrorgheist.
Day 1: Those who are ejected from the ritual on their first day are considered the ones with the weakest connection and least understanding of what they are. They gain flat black Arcakreen tattoos over their body to mark this.
Day 2: Those who make it to the second day have the liquid around them turn into copper and should they emerge on this day are covered in intricate shiny copper Arcakreen tattoos over their body.
Day 3: The third day is considered an above average accomplishment, while completing the ritual at all earns respect those of silver have shown they are powerful and understanding of themselves. Their bodies are covered in elaborate silver Arcakreen tattoos.
Day 4: The fourth day is exceptionally rare and a cause for immense celebration for the friends and family of the sorcerer who emerges on this day for they understand magic and themselves in a way that far exceeds their years, they are surely destined to be great and are often chosen to become instructors. Their bodies are covered in elaborate shiny gold Arcakreen tattoos.
Day 5: The rarest of the rare those who emerge at the very end of the ritual are celebrated and revered as an almost messiah like level for they are believed to be able to reach true apotheosis with their Muldraz. They are covered in mind bogglingly elaborate Arcakreen tattoos of pure platinum that seem to move over the body they move as if branches in the wind or even serpents along their body, they do this for at least a month after exiting the liquid before they begin to settle and only truly become active when in areas of intense Arcane energy or when casting a spell.
What are the mechanics to control to what day a PC makes it? I assume a fair amount of RP is involved, but what checks are needed?
It is largely an RP event, in which the dm will question the character/player and based on their answers displaying an understanding of the nature of the Arcane advances them. It isn't the sort of thing to just spring on a player, they should have a chance to learn things in character first.
As a bit of extra, the DM is encouraged to make them relive traumatic moments in their past, as this is a case of looking into the abyss and having it look back.
