The Conflict
Prelude
A group of orcs that had set up a war camp in the Flame Peak Mountains had set their sights on taking the fortress at Ithor's Pass. These orcs thought themselves clever and tasked their most clever goblin with creating an illusion for a group of orcs who would look like absurdly wealthy humans coming to the gates. In their minds, they would be welcomed right in and they could surprise the garrison there and let the rest of the orcs invade. A complication arose when they neglected to mention their plan to the rest of the orcs. When the group of orcs under the illusion approached the Gates of Ithor the rest of the orcs attacked seeing an easy target of shiny riches. This caused the defenders of the Gates of Ithor to rally and begin to fire on the attacking orcs, who killed their infiltration team and then turned to siege the Gates of Ithor.
Ithor's Pass is a wide break in between the Flame Peak Mountains that is largely stone with small patches of greenery and water. It makes for very wide open sightlines but several areas can be used as ambush points.
The battle lasted 16 days before a division of Gnomish Artificers took the chance to test some of their new contraptions on the assaulting orcs, unleashing dozens of clockwork golems armed with enchanted crossbows that never ran out of bolts. Caught between these two forces the orcs were mostly slain those who survived ran back into the Flame Peaks.
The largest effects revealed that there was an orcish war camp somewhere within the Flame Peaks and has allowed for the Gates of Ithor to be better reinforced against attacks from either side as a result.
The gnomes were also able to further perfect their clockwork golems after seeing them in battle, which no one is sure if that is good or not.
Historical Significance
The battle is mostly remembered as a humorous story given that the orcs thwarted their own plans that were unlikely to succeed in the first place.
