Blacksmithing

As a trained blacksmith, you can perform the following smithing processes using a blacksmithing workbench or travel kit to maintain or upgrade a character's equipment; however, the Metallurgy smithing process is very involved and, due to its length and complexity, will be covered in its own article linked at the bottom of this page.
Workbench
In order to help facilitate your smithing role-play, you can set up a workbench to create the sound and feeling of blacksmithing within the tavern or the market area and should not be set up where combat can occur. It can include more authentic phys-reps such a small forge, anvil, tongs, hammer, grinder, sander, apron, gloves, heat shield, face shield, chisels, vice, fullers, or any other thematic tools.
Travel Kit
Since blacksmithing can be done in the field and during combat, having a small travel kit is recommended. For simplicity's sake, it can consist of a single tool such as a rubber or foam hammer; however, it should not include sharp or dangerous objects.

Smithing Processes

Repair

You can spend a Long RP doing one of the following:
  • Restoring all On-Repair Advantages on a weapon;
  • Mending a Splintered shield; or
  • Restoring all Deflections and On-Repair Advantages on a piece of removed armor.
  • You must have the rep for the weapon, shield, or removed piece of armor in your possession to begin the process.

    Re-hafting and Refitting

    Each weapon, shield, and set of armor has some sort of material as their Foundation which is typically some kind of wood or leather of varying rarity. Items can only have a maximum of one Foundation at a time and replacing a Foundation with a new one destroys the previous one; however, they also deteriorate over time and only last for one season which means that a weapon, shield, or armor with a Foundation that is providing a unique Foundation Advantage will lose this benefit at the start of the next season.   You can spend a Long RP re-hafting a weapon or shield, or re-fitting armor, with a unique Foundation which consists of a wood source for a weapon or shield, or a leather source for armor. Aside from Timber and Hide, which are the most basic of Foundations, various wood and leather sources offer unique Advantages that can't be found elsewhere and augment a weapon, shield, or armor. Foundation Advantages are found on the wood or leather source and, thus, can be added directly to the armor tag without needing to see the Game Runners. Advantages will be covered in more detail in the Metallurgy and Forge Techniques and Advantages articles.   Click on the "Expand Table" button below to see the list of Foundations.
