Blighted Foothills
This vast stretch of largely uninhabited wilderness is full of stony hilltops, blind gullies, copses of sparse trees, and other such excellent ambush sites. What creatures do live here are generally hardy, violent, and tribal. Gnolls, goblinoids, orc clans and other such barbaric entities make their homes in small bands camped around the few sources of fresh water away from the Cascades. Only the strongest of these tribes can claim territory on the river itself, and many of them take advantage of this by raiding down the waterway, either preying on other such tribes or going so far as to attack Darfort. Violent storms frequently roll in from the mountains to the northeast, showering the Blighted Foothills in bursts of rain that are equally likely to cause flash floods or grassfires. There are few areas where the soil can support agriculture, and even fewer creatures likely to engage in it. In all, a deeply dangerous and unpleasant place to live.
