The warring nations of the world simultaneously destroy each other.

After decades of rising tensions, the one of the nuclear powers (no one was sure which one at the time) launched a nuclear attack on several other nations. Those nations responded nearly instantly, which caused a cascade event in which the bulk of the active nuclear arsenals of the world were deployed. Nearly all (99+%) of the population was destroyed.
