Frank Gillespie
Frank Gillespie seemed like an average man. He was a carpenter and worked odd jobs around Blackwell. He had a problem with alcohol and was a completely different man when he was drunk. This became all too clear when he was involved in an incident at the The Curved Horns. There was a fight, and a man was killed. Frank was arrested and charged with drunk and disorderly, and third-degree murder. He was sent to the small jailhouse before being shipped off to prison.
Suddenly, there was a change of plans. Frank was to be a part of an experiment that was to save lives. The local authorities had signed off on it, so it was permitted. Frank was sent to Dr. Crane's house. He was given an initial exam, then declared fit for the experiment. The experiments were brutal, and then he was given a strange liquid. It was incredibly foul-tasting and burned his insides. He passed out after taking it and was unconscious for two days.
Frank woke up in a makeshift hospital room in the doctor's house; it was dark and quiet. As he slowly came to consciousness, he realized that something was wrong. His body felt completely different. In the stillness of the sparsely furnished room, he couldn't feel his blood pumping, couldn't feel a heartbeat, anything. Frank sat in the darkness and tried to fathom what had happened and whether or not he was still asleep. Then, the doctor came in. Light came pouring in with him, but it was harsh and blinding. He felt sure then, that it was a nightmare. The doctor told him that the serum he had ingested had some strange side effects. He told Frank that his entire circulatory system shut down, that it was affecting his brain, but that he was still alive. He said that all the other patients reacted this way.
Frank was furious and terrified. "Why did you do this to us!? What could possibly be worth all of our deaths?"
The doctor stood in utter amazement for a moment. "You're not going to die, and I think we're making progress. We're going to make an amazing miracle cure that can heal a multitude of diseases. And, you're going to help me. You're the only one who resisted the changes so much as to keep your higher brain function. You must be incredibly special."
Frank still wanted to kill the man, but he felt he had little choice. He was told that he had been reported dead, so there was no going to prison, but there was no going out either. Maybe he could undermine the doctor from the inside instead...
Frank found that his specific ailment left his extremities cold and lifeless. He found that taking hot baths was the only way to bring any sort of warmth back to his body. He also found that alcohol didn't have the same effect that it used to. He used to drink to numb the pain and forget his problems. Now alcohol didn't do anything for him. He had to drink enough to kill a normal man to feel the slightest buzz. All in all, Frank hated this new existence, and he hated the doctor for making him this way.
The doctor seemed to rely on him the most. Out of all the serum experiments, he was the only one that retained his sanity. The doctor began to rely on him to organize and run things at the house while he was away. Frank hated the Doctor and didn't want to be involved, but maybe there was something he could do about this mess if he were in charge.
