Thomas Prynne
Thomas Prynne was a photographer and journalist. He traveled around the country following compelling stories and taking photographs. When Thomas' son Alexander, was a little older, he decided to travel more and take Alexander with him. He had been traveling with his son and documenting the effects of the Depression on more rural areas. They eventually made it to Blackwell and stayed at a boarding house in town. Thomas was photographing the natural beauty, the old well, and the imposing hospital when his son became ill and had to be taken to the hospital.
Alexander was kept long after the projected time. Reports ceased coming from the hospital. Thomas began to be turned away when he went to see his son. He inquired with the police, but nothing came of it.
Thomas began to hear reports of other patients disappearing. He decided to find the answers for himself. He posed as a patient needing care, then began poking around the hospital. He didn't find much on the first floor, but he found some of the missing patients on the lower floor. It was at that moment that he was caught. They locked him up in a cell in the psych ward.
Thomas knew he would have to come up with a plan. He began to try to make friends with the orderlies. He was as compliant as possible. Then, he would get them talking. Surely, before too long, one of them would be willing to make a deal with him; trade some tools, or even open the door. Thomas had to hope. After several days of this, an orderly came to the cell door with a very dark expression.
"Thomas," he said, "they are going to do a procedure on you to help with your mental state. It's going to make everything all better."
"But there's nothing wrong with my mental state."
"I know."
The orderly looked truly sad and conflicted over what he was supposed to do. Thomas watched as he reached for the latch to the cell door and began to quietly open it. Just as he was about to mouth the word "run," Dr. Crane walked in.
"Good morning! Are we ready for the procedure?"
"Very good, then let's get started."
And just like that, Thomas Prynne was given a lobotomy. Everything became hazy and he couldn't remember why he was there. Fortunately for Thomas Prynne, he took detailed notes and hid them in his cell. He studied them every day and took more to continue his mission. Over the next four years, Thomas studied his notes, kept watch, and made friends with the orderlies. No one thought him capable of anything dangerous in his condition.
In 1942, Thomas had gathered plenty of information on the abducted patients. He convinced an orderly to let him out of his cell. He then went and released other patients from their cells who went and did the same. This lead to a hospital breakout that turned into a hospital riot.
In the chaos, Thomas stood in the courtyard. Some patients ran by him, screaming, "we have to get the patients from Dr. Crane's house!" He was about to run after them, but something hit him from behind,
/*The orderly?*/
and everything went black.
