Public Knowledge - Hospital by Royal Charter
The GRI, as it is formally shortened to, was founded in 1794. It is a large teaching hospital, spreading over 20 acres and a capacity of over a thousand beds. As part of the NHS, it is publicly funded and supports the large city with emergency services, surgeries and specialist health personnel. The hospital specialises in Cardiology, Plastic Surgery, Gynaecology, but is more than capable for most of general medicine. The Infirmary is affiliated with the University of Glasgow, and as such is not entirely independent.
Insider Knowledge - Torn Identities
As a teaching hospital, the Infirmary has high standards in terms of methods employed, research produced and staff educated. However - with increasing violence in the city of Glasgow, diseases and worry, as well as an ageing population, pressures have been levied on the institution to work faster, better and provide higher levels of care for increasingly smaller issues that would usually be referred to other institutions. With the increase of private health insurances applying further stress, the Hospital regularly buckles under the stress - increasing waittimes, decreasing care and having to find emergency temporary workers with little notice.
