Ethnotypes/Secondary Backgrounds
Juxtalar/Juxtalen: the gregaroius after people, from juxtapose and dweller. Meaning dwelling alongside. Decended from the survivors of massive overcrowded public shelters. Living in large groups underground is normal enough to them that many elders become very unsettled in the open. The shelters were government projects constructed by the lowest bidders then crowded far beyond safe capacities, stressing the life support and resources. Radiation leakage was common which mutated them as a people, accelerating their evolutionary adaptation to the global conditions. Most have a dry, leathery skin with long hair over upper surfaces of the body, top of head, shoulders, upper back and chest, outer surfaces of arms and legs.
Base Tech Level: D A stress on society and culture in the face of technological collapse has made the Juxtalen slow to take up the reigns of more advanced technology. While Juxtalen mechanics can build, maintain and repair machinery it remains rough and poorly understood. Most Juxtalen shrug it off as acceptable sorcery and some mechanics use ritual processes to do their jobs.
Class tendancies: Generally those of service to community although solitary mavericks exist: Bard, Cleric, Paladin, Wizard
Proficiencies: Insight or Persuasion or Religion, one tool proficiency
Equipment: Ritual of Bread kit, desert robes
Remtelar/Remtelen: the antisocial dwellers of remote places, from remote and the prefix tele-. Meaning far away from everyone else and themselves. Decendents of a fringe group of people who listened to the unrest and prepared to endure the conflict. They studied, trained, built and stockpiled. Many were slain in the ensuing panic, survivors did so by remaining aloof and hidden. They remain the most informed, enlightened and practiced survivalists. As a society they see no difference, other than anatomically between genders and exhault a practiced androgynous aesthetic. They are generally shorter than normal and thin.
Base Tech Level: E The more learned and solitary Remtelen continue to find and build on pre-collapse technology where it would improve their lives. They are no strangers to ruins and well acquainted with the dangers of the open desert and the Amerite settlements. They have an eye for compact, valuable salvage and will trade with great caution to the Amerites. With the Juxtalen they exchange knowledge or skills so long as they don't have to enter their claustrophobic homes.
Class tendancies: those of a solitary nature: Barbarian, Druid, Monk, Ranger, Sorceror
Proficiencies: Stealth or Arcana or History, one tool proficiency
Equipment: Desert Robes, solar still
Amerite/Amerites: Decendants of the classes of people that would have been preserved from the conflict by the ruling government, by substantial expense in private shelter systems, away from the rest of the population. Self labeled from the Spanish ameritar meaning to merit. Originally the wealthiest, most learned, or by other metrics deemed of great value. Saved with the purpose that survivors would rebuild a better population. Instead fell to petty bickering, and fractious politics. Their presence represents what was and went wrong and the source of the conflict which ended the world to the rest of the survivors. The Amerites still view themselves as the only ones worthy, calling the other peoples by derogatory slang which they happily reciprocate.
Base Tech Level: F Decended from the people with access to the highest tech pre-collapse, much of that knowledge has been passed down. Without such technological marvels to apply bookish skills to, much has been lost. They continue to rely on threadbare devices for their survival, eternally scavenging for more materials to keep them going.
Class tendancies: mostly those of a short-sighted or rogueish bent: Artificer, Fighter, Rogue, Warlock
Proficiencies: Investigation or Deception or Perception, one tool proficiency
Equipment: one tool kit, light armor or access to scrap
A few words used by the various peoples. Remember they are embittered against each other for various reasons. Not all people use these words, but the more xenophobic ones will.
Utori/Utoren: Juxtalen slang for the Amerites. From Japanese Stories and meaning subhuman filth people.
Decatano/Decaten: Remtelen slang for Amerites. From the word decadent and meaning those that live in the shadow and squalor of their own collapsed society without redemption.
Mangrel/s: Amerite slang for the Juxtalen. From mongrel and meaning creature of undefinable descent but probably humanish.
Dexile/s: Amerite slang for the Remtelen. From desert exile and meaning the same but suggesting decendants of criminals or people expelled from Amerite society.
