The Alvar Missive
Near the end of the great revolts when all the sapient races rose up against Alvar rule, leaflets fell from the sky. As they fluttered to the ground, the Alvar withdrew from all the conflicts. Everywhere Alvar seemed to just vanish. Some stepped through doors and no amount of searching ever found them. Others waved slivery objects before archways and stepped through air that seemed to shimmer for just an instant. A few entered their homes and the entire structure faded away in a cloud of fog. Wherever Alvar left, more leaflets drifted on the wind. Where they fell in water or were rained on, they dissolved without a trace. Despite that, there were more than enough surviving leaflets. Only scholars remember what was written on the leaflets, and history has recorded it as little more than a smug dismissal by the Alvar.
“Our Dear Misguided Children: There comes a time of understanding by all parents when they must acknowledge when their offspring wishes to leave the nest that nurtured them. To our great dismay, it seems our children wish to be free of us, though it is clear they lack the maturity to properly understand their fate. We have decided that our children must learn the pains of responsibility for their actions. While we will not forget their rebellious nature, we hope for them to channel this desire for self-determination constructively. We have allowed them to leave the house and packed away our cribs and playpens. Gone are the gifts and toys from our hands. We will leave the gates to our yards open, but the doors we have closed. No longer will we bandage your knees or settle your petty squabbles. Free from the burdens of raising their young, it is time for the parents to return to their own affairs. Great hardships are on the horizon. We speak neither of testing you nor conflicts between yourselves. Remember at these times that it was you that rejected our shields. Take heart that the path of wisdom you walk was the one you created by choice. Become the strong peoples we know you can be. Great will be your suffering if you cannot forgive weakness and find compassion for each other.”
