The Great Fall of the Clefts

The rippling hills and valleys east of the Parus Barren channel water into a deep, but narrow, south-flowing river. It tumbles off a tall cliff, plunging nearly a thousand feet into the forest below, obscuring the view with a constant mist.   During the Seige of Stormfort, the entire headwaters of the river were laid over with powerful spells to confuse and disorient the enemy. The cliff itself was placed under an illusion, so anyone approaching along the river would think the forest simply continued. So successful was the tactic that not one that ventured here returned to tell of their adventure. While the valleys earned quite the sinister nickname, and terrifying stories of them abound, the falls themselves seem clear of this shadow. The cliff, like the valleys, has a reputation for killing those that approach it. While the stories about the valleys are sinister and vile, including lurking shadows, sudden chills, and stopping hearts, the cliff's stories are of mindless beauty. Much like the flowers of carnivorous plants luring in their prey, so does the cliff. For those unfamiliar with the land in the area, the cliff can come suddenly. Careless wanderers regularly wander right off into the open air, never realizing the ground has ended. Like a false summit, the cliff never seems to get closer, until you've nearly walked off it. The lucky can grasp for branches before they take the longest plunge of their life.   Approaching the cliff from the opposite direction, that is from the ground below, is a different experience. Those that keep their distance are treated to the sight of the river falling from an incredible height. The roar of water can be heard from a long way off. The south-flowing river changes direction after the fall to flow more west than south and hugs the bottom of the cliff in continuous rapids until it leaves the cliff face a mile from the falls. There the river widens and slows as it goes through a lowland. This is the first place it is safe to cross the river after the falls, although there is no bridge or ford.
