Ghost Terminology
- Ectoplasm: Physical remnants of a ghost’s presence (ie blood, water, dirt). Not from the physical remains.
- Ghost: A spirit that remains on the mortal plane of existence, unable to or refusing to move on. Ghosts are typically created after an extremely violent or emotional death.
- Haunt/haunting: The active presence and activity of a ghost
- Medium: A living person with the natural ability to see and/or communicate with the dead
- Remains: The body, or part of the body, of the ghost. A ghost is often tied to this.
- Seance: The act of summoning or communicating with a ghost
- Spirit: A non-corporal sentient entity, such as a soul or demon
- Unfinished business: An act that the ghost must complete before moving on
Types of Ghost
- Apparition: The image of a spirit that is not present, an image of the past
- Fetch: The ghost of a still living person
- Phantom: A ghost or collection of ghosts tied to a vehicle (ie phantom train, phantom ship, phantom car). Often apparitions.
- Poltergeist: A ghost that can interact with physical objects, make loud noises, and cause harm to the living. Almost every other type of ghost can become a poltergeist.
- Shade: The spirit of a dead human residing in the afterlife
- Specter: A ghost that retains its sense of reasoning to a degree. They are far less violent than poltergeists and cannot interact with physical objects.
- Wraith: A ghost of someone recently passed.
