Library of Verti

Wanderer... Who wades among these sepulchres of Verti's arcane knowledge? A gentleman and a scholar perhaps? No... I think not!

A once proud and noble structure, this palace of learning and sophistication has long since been consumed by the oily black waters of the Styx. Miles of corridors and shelves stretch down beneath the surface, warped and twisted by their new occupants who are none too keen on intrusion by outsiders. Most of the structure is completely immersed, the waters flooding the hallways and repositories somehow more clear than that of the Styx itself, yet this water sill has a strange, polluted feeling to it. The surface of pools within the walls shimmer with a strange iridescence, and one simply can not shake the foul feeling of being somehow tainted by its touch.   It is said that in the Old Aeons, a powerful soul by the name of Verti decided to enforce his will over a small portion of the Land of the Dead by erecting a monument to knowledge, scholarship and learning. In his infinite humbleness he named the library after himself, and in his infinite wisdom he built it in the middle of a great swamp, which the library promptly sank into. Undeterred, Verti constructed a second library on top of where the first had subsided. This too promptly sank into the swamp. After pausing to ponder for an age, Verti constructed a third library using the ruins of the first two as foundation stones. All seemed to be well until this third library inexplicably caught fire, fell over, and promptly sank into the swamp. His fourth attempt was his greatest success and crowning glory, standing proud and tall for Aeons... until the river Styx suddenly changed its course and flooded the entire swamp basin. Now only the tops of the tallest parts of the structure stand above the stygian waters, and Verti has not been seen since.
