Night City's most important place of learning has also been a hotbed for a lot of radical thought and provocative groups. Its researchers balance independent studies while avoiding stepping on the toes of any mega-corp that could sue them into oblivion. The solution has often been to take on research grants from several corps hoping bias will cancel out and they might do some research of their own with the scraps of funding left.
The faculties have a lot of freedom in what they choose to research and teach, as long as they bring in money to the organization at large. This is a conscious tactic of willful ignorance. Corporations can't blame parts of the university that weren't involved in some controversy. No one buys this feigned helplessness, of course, but so far NCU's lawyers have successfully used it as a shield.
Every faculty is led by its own dean. This might seem like a prestigious title, but many compare it to being a sacrificial lamb waiting for the knife. They have a lot of resources at their disposal, but one mistake could lose their job. Or worse. The department heads underneath them are only slightly better off. But it usually falls to them to secure funding for the department. This means recruiting students, convincing corporations that public research is worth spending money on, and beg funds and charities for money. This leaves the professors and other researchers and teachers. They're at the mercy of the whims of those above them. All they can do is try to show that they're worthy of the funds their department head can procure and the support of their dean. This means some ethics need to be realigned and some dreams abandoned.
