Nomads
The first nomads as they are known today were the result of the The Collapse. As the USA's economy crashed, jobs all across the continent dwindled while taxation kept new businesses from taking their place. Towns and smaller cities were unable to sustain their population. Changes in food production as well as CHOOH2 being developed by Biotechnica meant the American farmlands were abandoned. Various corporation would later buy those farms cheap, but at first, it just became lawless badlands.
Some decided that, while staying where they wasn't an option, neither was moving to the expanding slums of the cities. They packed all the had onto trucks and cars to become mobile. They became Nomads. These groups, centered around different families, such as the Aldecaldos, became experts att staying safe along the dangerous routes of the nation. Unless you could afford an armed convoy through the military or a security corp, sending something with Nomads was your best bet at getting a person or object to its destination.
Nomads quickly became saught after manual labour, as they were willing to move into an area for the job without demanding permanent solutions. This is why they were instrumental in the rebuilding of Los Angeles after the Los Angeles earthquake, Chicago after the Bioplague, and much more.
Some nomad families have ended up in other locations. There are completely separate Nomad clans in places like Japan and Soviet, of course, but that's not all. There are whole clans that travel the high seas instead of the roads. MetaKey is both a corporation and the floating home of a Nomad clan. Highriders are Nomads in space who travel from station to station and ship to ship, doing construction or repair while carrying cargo with them.
The Nomads act in accordance with a heirarchy that's also one of loyalty. A family consisdes of those you ride with and therefore trust with your life time and time again. Many families together form a clan that's held together by traditions and values. Clans might in turn form tribes with each other if they often work in the same area, keeping everyone a bit safer. When clans want to become a true force to reckon with so that they have a say on a larger scale, they form Nomad nations. North America has seen seven great Nomad Nations: Aldecaldos, Jodes, Snake Nation, Thelas Nation, Folk Nation, Blood Nation and MetaCorp.
