Uncle Matheus

Uncle Matheus is Roe's uncle on their father's side. After Roe's mother died, Matheus stepped in and adopted Roe, becoming their legal guardian. Little is known about Matheus besides that he had a wife and child who both died during the birthing process. Uncle Matheus' status is conditional, based off of the player choices. He is either still alive and well, or was killed by Raum and his group in No Good Deed.

Personal history

Upon his wife and child passing away, Matheus began to drink, becoming an alcoholic. It took two years of constant persuasion and support from Roe's father and mother to finally get him to seek help and attend AA meetings to help him. It was during this time that Roe's father also passed away, almost causing Matheus to re-seek the bottle. Upon meeting Roe, Matheus swore to never touch another bottle as well as be in Roe's life, helping their mother with anything that she needed. When Roe's mother passed away, Matheus immediately adopted Roe and did all that he could to make Roe as comfortable as possible.
Though it's not known what Matheus did in the past, he currently works at a local factory with maintenance and assembly.

Season One

Uncle Matheus is first introduced when Roe hurries to his home after not being able to visit him the previous day, due to them helping Sydero to the hospital. They have the option to give Matheus an apology gift, but he doesn’t seem phased whether he gets one or not. The two speak about what’s going on, and Matheus inquires about their therapist trips and if everything is still going on. Roe can confide in him or just go off to bed.
Later the next day, depending on Roe’s choices, Matheus can be saved from Raum, or he’s killed by Raum and his group. If killed, Sydero will burn down the house to get rid of any evidence, as well as to further prove the point to Roe that they can’t return home now that they’ve chosen this path. If he is saved, then Roe drives him to a hotel for the time being. They can tell him the truth, tell him the partial truth, or not tell him at all.

Personality

Matheus is a down to earth guy who loves the simple things in life. He doesn't need much to be happy and seems to enjoy the regular routine of his daily life. A lack of a woman in his life makes one presume that he never truly got over his wife dying, and it is seen plenty times that Roe is like Matheus' own child. He likes to tease and joke and is shown to be worried multiple times when it comes to Roe's therapist sessions and visions.

“My uncle was eating popcorn when I told him, as soon as I said that I was interested in guys he stared at me, threw a popcorn kernel at me, asked if I found Hugh Jackman attractive, and then we had a full conversation about our man crushes. So yea, he had a lot to say about it.” - Roe to Chris

From the little we see and hear about Uncle Matheus, one can quickly come to the assumption that he's a very supportive man. He adopts Roe without hesitation, raises them as if they're his own, and continues to support them through their life. We learn that he helped with paying Roe's tuition, and if Roe is transgender or gay/lesbian, then he accepts Roe without judgment or hesitation.
