Moon skin
All around the villages of the Golden Sea, we see people with an impressive condition: compared to other with tanned skin, they are white as an heerus egg. And it's always people at an advanced age. This condition starts around 60 years old, and people's sking wil get clearer and clearer as years pass.
Some say it's caused by the strength of the sun, but others prefer to see it as an act of the gods. According to a rebaari sayings, this is the act of Paal, god of death and of the moon and stars. Paal choses to affect old people, to prepare them for joining heavens on the moon. Thus, people become white as the moon, as a symbol of their readiness to pass away.
But Paal is in constant fightings with Sides, the god of fire and sun. So Sides tries to annoy Paal by hurting the elderly. That's the explanation of why people with moon skin suffer heavy sunburns, and sometimes die early from catching too much sunlight. They are seen mysteriously growing dark spots or red patches on their skin, which leads to a painful death in a few years. Though the condition seems grim to the other communities as it precedes and announces death, south Rebaari see it more as a blessing, because it gives to the person the promess of joining the heavenly afterlife. In villages, it is common practice to build a large house with no windows, which is dedicated to elderly people with moon skin. There, they can be protected from harmful sunlight, and live easy while waiting for the time Paal will come at them.
