The Kingdom of Brahan

The Kingdom of Brahan is a large kingdom in northern Teochabuth, which encompasses all of the Brahan region.  It is ruled by a King, and is where most of the story of The Strays takes place.

Structure

The kingdom is is ruled by the King.  He is the absolute authority, and has the perogitive to delegate powers to members of his council and court.   Below him are Dukes, who rule one the 5 major regions of the kingdom.  The title of Duke is almost exclusively given to members of the royal family, and thus almost never reside within the region.   Below the Dukes are the Counts.  The Duchies are broken up into Counties, which is what the Counts preside over.  The Counts normally reside within the region they rule, but there are exceptions who choose to reside within the capital, or the Ducal capital.     Below the Counts are barons, who rule over a small region, normally a village or a mining town.  Often given to local individuals by the ruling Count.     On the same level as Barons are Lords.  They are normally powerful and rich families, but they often don't own land they can collect tax from like Baron's do.  A Lord might own a large fleet of fishing boats, or a mercenary company.   However, even though the ranks are hierarchal (and mostly hereditary), that does not mean that ranks on the same level have the same influence.  A Baron will pay tax to a Count, who will pay tax to their Duke, who will pay tax to the King; but if a lord is within the King's court, or even are a member of the King's council, they can have far more power than any Count on the fringe of the kingdom.
