Doom-shelter
Purpose / Function
A Doom-shelter is designed to retain heat and withstand heavy snows and rimestone formations during Winter and the Rimes, and a typical Doom Shelter can hold anywhere from a single family to an entire town's population.
Alterations
The original Doom-shelter was a simple construction made of blocks of packed snow, but the fact that this material melts during warmer weather meant that it was being rebuilt every eighth year; this rebuilding could and did lead to- in the case of large populations- riots over who had to build it and who got to go in first, as well as- when a heavy snow storm struck before the shelter was done- deaths that could have been prevented had the shelter been ready. In more modern times, the Doom-shelter has been constructed out of wood, and the walls stuffed with whatever insulating material is readily available. Many Doom-shelters are begun below ground level, so that as little of the roof as possible is visible from above- this helps retain more heat.
Architecture
Both ancient and modern Doom-shelters were designed to follow a specific arch, one which lent amazing stability, even under the weight of the heavy snows of Winter and the rimestone formations of the Rimes.
