Factions, Cooperation and Betrayal
The factions system
There are at this moment 6 playable factions in Let's Kill Hitler!, the factions being organized between Neutrals (the Locals faction), Allies (Brits, Froggies, Commies and Yanks factions) and Axis forces (the Baddies faction). The good people of Braunau represent a seventh, not playable, faction which is discussed here.Factions are represented on the map by their respective leader. If this one is captured or killed, the faction is disabled.
They also have agents which can be dispatched to any area of the map.
Neutrals, Allies and Axis factions are given distinctive main missions:
When playing one of the Allies factions:Needless to say, your main mission as a member of the Allies is to kill Hitler.
Obviously, this will prove an impossible task as the Baddies have already exfiltrated him before your arrival. In its wisdom, the Allied Command has modified its strategy.
After a convulated process involving complex computations, a lot of meetings (with free coffee and bagels), drafting of lengthy slideshows, even more meeting (without coffee and bagels because we ran out of these), Allied Scientists have come to the conclusion that killing one of the ancestors of Hitler would suffice, because who cares about spatio-temporal paradoxes?
As there are 4 ancestors of Hitler which have not been evacuated, so you shall identify, locate and kill at least one of them.
When playing as the Axis:
With Japanese busy, busy busy playing Battleship with the Americans in the Pacific and the Italian already not so sure they took the right decision, the Reich stands alone in this fight (at least, until the next version of the Rules, stay tuned!).
You already have shown your courage and loyalty by exfiltrating your beloved Fuhrer, but it appears so that his life is still at risk! .
On this point, the superior Aryan scientists and the despicable Judeo-bolchevik scientists inexplicably do seem to concur: who cares about spatio-temporal paradoxes?
As a result, should the Allies manage to kill any of the 4 ancestors of Hitler which you did not manage to evacuate, Germany would be condemend to a bleak future in which its pharmaceutical, automotive and heavy industries would not be worldwide leaders, and it would not be dominating a united Europe from a political and economical standpoint....Which kind of world would that be?
You shall therefore defend at all costs these 4 individuals. Luckily, time travel, like any non-German product or service, is of poor quality and has limited lifetime, so you only have to hold until your opponents are automatically sent back to where they came from.
Of course, defeating them before that would be a clear demonstration of the invicibility of the Reich, and would guarantee you and your men the prospective of a bright career, as far away as possible from the Eastern Front.
When playing the Neutrals:
Tiroleans have the right to live peacefully in Tirol, to eat, drink, dance, sing and live Tirolean and to do all sorts of Tirolean things that Tirolean people do without interferences from non-Tirolean individuals, whose only function shall be to support Tirolean cultural domination over the world by buying Tirolean hats on their way back to their non-Tirolean home.
This is, in a few words, the position of the F.I.S.T. (Front for an Independent and Sovereign Tirol), which takes very seriously the fact that foreign powers do seem, for an unknown reason, to have elected the quiet town of Braunau to settle their score, and this on the eve of Saint-Schnitzel, the saint patron of the town...
This hideous aggression shall not stand! With the full support of your numerous partisans within Braunau's population, you shall drive away the aggressors, and prevent them by any means from inflicting damage to the town and its population.
In addition, each faction has a hidden agenda:
Old Grudges: A Brits and Froggies strategic goalLooks like old habits die hard, and these two factions, even when pursuing a common interest, will try their best to cripple the other in order to finally settle a score that dates back from Eleanor.
As Froggies or Brits, you shall make sure that the other faction does not make it out alive of Braunau, while still keeping it as discrete as possible.
Class Warfare: A Yanks and Commies strategic goal
Antagonistic viewpoints on the way crony capitalism should be effectively implemented and managed and third party countries kept under influence make these two factions archenemies.
The crucial question of knowing whether a robber baron will turn the Kremlin into a private golf course or if it is an oligarch who will do the same with the White House shall be settled in Braunau: make sure your opponent bites the dust, literally if possible....
Bridging the Gap: A Baddies strategic goal
Of course, pure blooded Aryan scientists are experts in a variety of very advanced scientific subject matters (building flying saucers in Arctic bases, playing Oui-Ja, establishing precise lineage between German citizens and Norse gods,...) but so far this has inexplicably led to very little practical achievements.
Meanwhile, there is intel that inferior judeo-bolchevik scientists would be studying the properties of something called "the atom". Not exactly sure what this is and what it could be used for, but capturing one of the Allies leaders alive would definitely allow our brilliant Aryan scientists to gain the necessary information in order to debunk these grotesque so called "scientific findings".
Who the hell is this guy?: A Locals strategic goal
Apparently, all these non-Tirolean intruders are very excited about some guy named "Adolf".
From what you could gather, looks like they think this guy is going to become some sort of tour operator for Germans keen on travelling abroad. Sure, you would not mind a little more tourism in the region, but something tells you that this might end up with some bad buzz.
You should definitely investigate this matter further, which requires you to bring in alive one of the other factions leaders for questioning.
Last, each faction has a bonus goal:
Manners maketh man: Brits bonus goalThe Brits should perform their mission with the minimum damage to the local infrastructure and population. Stealth assassination does not count, but damages dealt to the infrastructure by other factions do.
Misalignment: Froggies bonus goal
The Froggies shall perform their mission achieving a higher score than both the Commies and the Yanks player, and without any aggressive action against them. Stealth assassination and agents conversion are not considered aggressive actions.
Big Brother is Watching You! Commies bonus goal
The Commies shall perform their mission while converting a larger number of NPCs into agents than the other factions in order to benefit from a strong influence and spying network once the war is over.
Toppling Braunau's government (see the Rules) gives extra bonus.
Democracy and Reconstruction: Yanks bonus goal
The Yanks shall perform their mission while dealing maximum damage to the local infrastructure, in order to warranty strong reconstruction business opportunities after the war.
Toppling Braunau's government (see the Rules) gives extra bonus.
Vested Interests: Locals bonus goal
These rumours about the fact that Ursula Von der Lederhausen, the charismatic leader of F.I.S.T., would secretly be backed up by Braunau's pharmaceutical industry might be true.
Raise your popularity within Braunau's population and topple Braunau's government (see the Rules) in order to achieve this bonus goal, but beware: should Herr Pfizz's pharmaceutical factory be destroyed during the game, you will lose your bonus.
Co-op vs Free-for-All:
Before starting the game, players are requested to enter (or refuse to enter) into secret pacts with each another. These non-aggression pacts prohibit direct attacks (see the Rules) but do not prevent to use indirect attacks such as area-wide damage dealing weapons, and do not limit the actions of factions agents, leaving ample room for betrayal.
In addition, Allies can choose to play in Co-op or Free-for-All mode.
In the case they play in Co-op, the aforementioned secret pacts are enacted automatically. In Free-for-All, beware of "friendly" fire!
