Personal history
Fordar's parents were themselves adventurers (a priest and a bard), but he grew up very poor, due to the family's home in Stehlenwald being destroyed in a cave-in when he was twelve.
As a child, when Fordar was foraging in a trash heap, he found a sealed trunk containing a chain-mail hauberk, and a pouch containing a magic scroll.
As a "teenager" (in dwarf terms), his friends brought him in to their criminal enterprise, which mostly involved robbing from moneylenders. This eventually progressed to a plan to rob a man they had learned was the leader of a cult of Gorodyn, the arch-daemon of avarice. Ford had been perfectly willing to steal from the merely greedy, but was so uncomfortable with the prospect of real spiritual corruption that he informed the law of this plan, hoping this would prevent his friends from going through with the plan. However, rather than arrest them ahead of time, they waited to catch the crew in the act. Things went sideways, and all of Ford's friends were killed.
Out of remorse, he sought out religion, eventually finding a priest of Miklas. Moved by the message of mercy, Fordar became a devoted follower. He has shaved his beard in penance, and intends to remain clean-shaven until he has atoned for his past.
