Black Coast

The Black Coast is a region occupied by Vorgoi tribes located in the Western Sapphire Sea, south of the Vorgsian Tribelands. It borders the Kingdom of Marsilis to the east, and the sea to the West and South. Black Coasters are known to the rest of the world as marauders and pirates, as their black-hulled ships are often only encountered outside their homeland during raiding expeditions. Their homeland is often called the Broken Coast or the Storm Coast as well, due to how often storms happen there all year round. The seas around the Black Coast are exceedingly hard to navigate, not only because of the storms but the many hazards present on the seas there. Sandbanks, shallows, and jagged rocks. Black-Coaster ships sometimes have what they call a 'Sea Witch' on board, a sorceress that often shows some command over the elements and knowledge about the weather. Black Coaster pirates of renown use this knowledge to come in and out of their homeland between storms, and conduct surprise raids in days of mist.

Structure

The Black Coast tribes have no central organization, each chief controlling his own people. The customary, chiefdom is hereditary, but any chief may be challenged by those beneath for leadership if they are perceived as weak. Issuing a challenge without proper cause or justification is seen as a power-grabbing move and while the challenge might still be honored, it will severely impact the respect of the challenger even if he comes out victorious. However, should the challenge happen after the leader did something that was perceived as weak, or made a decision the tribe reviled, the challenge tends to be seen as proper and righteous, and the challenger, winning or losing, might end up gaining much respect from the rest of the tribe. Outsiders may issue challenges but the chief is in no obligation to heed to them and may ignore them without harming his image much, in most contexts. Only challenges issues from members of the chief tribe really carry weight. Good leadership in the Black Coast is defined by one's ability to bring home food, slaves and loot from raids on other tribes or foreigners, as well as protecting the tribe from the monstrous creatures that inhabit the region, thus the search for a 'strong' leader.
