Asteroid Owner's Letter
The Asteroid Owner's Letter is a unique document, but known throughout the galaxy as an essentially immutable deed to an asteroid in the Dalkit 422 System.
Physically the letter is about 30 cm by 50 cm and about 3 cm thick. It is engraved with the legal designation of the asteroid and the name(s) of the owner(s). It also contains an electronic chip with corroborating information that can be matched to legal databases used throughout the system.
What makes the "letter" unique is that the it is a physical cut of substance from the owned asteroid itself. The unique nature of the makeup of each asteroid along with the marked location of where the "letter" was removed makes it a powerful and nearly irrefutable method of proving ownership.
When the substance of the asteroid is not stable (take ice for instance) in normal habitable environments, then the "letter" is encased in a nearly invisible and impermeable force field to protect it. In proper environments and under strict controls and other legal requirements, the original may be examined when necessary and then reinstated to it's protective enclosure to prevent any tampering or destruction of the original piece.
When asteroids are sold, inherited, or otherwise legally change hands, the original piece is restored to the asteroid as a memorial and completes the past record of ownership. A new letter is fashioned with the current owner's information.
It can be very difficult for some people to explain their possession of a letter when the proper steps of authentication have not been followed.
