SCC Sector Overseer

As a Sector Overseer, you are in charge of every worker within your designated section of the salvaging ship Byzantium. Not only must you ensure the wellbeing of your crew, but you must also ensure all threats to your sector and the craft as a whole are seen to. Fortunately, you won't be alone, as working directly beneath you are your Heads of Staff, responsible for all that goes on within their departments, though only you have the final say on everything. Your rubber stamp can make or break projects and avert or hasten disaster. Lead wisely, for as much as you struggled to reach this position, your superiors can take it all away with a single stroke of the pen.

Being an Overseer

Under day-to-day operations, you are at the top of the chain of command in your sector, and the priviliges you are granted demonstrate it. Every overseer is granted an all-access ID card, equipment exclusive to your job, a well-furnished office, and a snazzy uniform to set you apart from the rest. All of these are necessary, for you may very well have the most difficult job in your sector.

Managing your crew

Under normal circumstances, your responsibilities would include managing your Heads of Staff, changing the sector-wide alert level, contacting your superiors, and ensuring the salvage keeps flowing. The sector will rarely be operating under normal circumstances. Your crew will consist of folks from all around the Orion Spur, all with their own motivations, ideologies, and in some cases, bad blood with employees from other locations. It's your job to ensure they work together long enough to meet the day's quotas, by any means necessary. Keep these tips in mind:
  1. Delegate, delegate, delegate. If there's a virus tearing through your sector's cyberspace, order your Chief Technician to handle it. That is the responsibility of the Maintenance department, focus on your own responsibilities. Same goes for any other situation.
  2. Do not put yourself at unnecessary risk. If there is a threat to the sector, do not throw yourself onto the frontlines. If your security officers are unable to respond to it, order the crew to fill in for them. Your armor and weaponry is for self defense only.
  3. Keep calm. In a crisis, your crew will look up to you for leadership. You must show courage in the face of adversity, for if you don't, the rest of the crew may very well follow your example in all the wrong ways. Good luck.

Sector Finances

As the Overseer, you alone have access to your sector's Account Uplink Terminal, as well as the Materials Allocation Terminal.

The Account Uplink Terminal allows you to access the funds of all crew members and funding for each of the three departments, Maintenance, Medical, and Acquisitions. Your access to the crews' accounts is solely for the purpose of oversight, as a full transaction history is included for each account. Unless you can confirm an act of fraud, embezzlement, or theivery, you should never take money out of these accounts. Department accounts are best managed by the relevant Head of Staff.

More important to your job is the Materials Allocation Terminal. Once Acquisitions has submitted all materials gained from salvage and mining expeditions for processing, and has set up survey markers on the derelict to be scrapped, you will be able to determine who gets the resources. All national and corporate entities working with the SCC are valid options to send resources to, though a minimum share of materials must be provided to the SCC itself for the sake of maintaining the Byzantium. Certain diplomatic agreements and other events may enforce minimum and maximum allocation values to aforementioned national and corporate entities, so be sure to keep an eye on the news. It should also be completely clear that you may sometimes be required to provide materials to an entity you do not like. If this idea sounds abhorrent to you, please resign as soon as possible.

In Case of Emergencies

A calm shift is seldom guaranteed, but you have a wide array of tools and talent at your disposal to mitigate any damage. A full set of Ship Regulations and how they're relevant to your responsibilities can be found in document SCC-0451-A. Document -B details Standard Operating Procedure for Overseers, particularly the nature of alert levels. Overseers may be familiar with the standard Green-Blue-Red levels of security readiness from previous jobs, but every salvaging sector on board the Byzantium also is able to make use of the Yellow Alert, for biological emergencies ranging from viral outbreaks to hostile xenofauna, as well as Orange Alert for emergencies both in real and cyberspace that require the Maintenance department to handle.

Overseers are also provided with the ability to move their sector to a level known as Delta Alert, to be used only in the case of uncontrollable emergency that poses a threat beyond your sector and/or will result in the seizure of critical SCC assets and information by a hostile party. It is at this point that we'd like to once again remind you that the material you are reading is classified and must not be shown to anyone below the position of Overseer. Upgrading to this level requires a fax or emergency transmission sent to Central Command containing the code listed in document SCC-077 in order to verify its legitimacy. Once an activation code has been sent from CentCom, you will be able to activate the Scuttling Device. There is no turning back after this point. All railways between your sector and the rest of the Byzantium will be sealed off, and after a few minutes, the sector will be forcefully decoupled from the ship and once it has travelled a safe distance, self-destruct.

Keeping your Job and your Head

Though you are the ultimate authority in your sector, your Heads of Staff are a vital part of the balance of power. In case of your absence, they have the ability to vote on Overseer-level decisions, and in the case of a unanimous vote, have permission to override your decisions or place you under suspension if it's believed your decisions will cause undue damage and loss of life. If the decision to suspend you was motivated by a violation of Ship Regulations, security does have the ability to arrest you. We trust that our Overseers, upholders of the SCC mission, would never make such thoughtless decisions to land them in such a situation.

Closing Words

The Sector Overseer is a strange job, one that is simultaneously envied yet undesirable. But it is a necessary one, and those who rise up to the occasion are given every accomodation possible, in order to ensure the continuation of our way of life. Good luck, Overseer.

I did not expect to enjoy reading a technical article so much! The job description itself is engaging, but it's what you've put in the sidebar that's really piqued my interest. What's the difference between human and transhuman? Who are Lloyd and Ihejirika and what led to their developing the exam? Should I be concerned about this Morality Enforcer augment? Wait--everything's on fire again?!

It may be presumptuous of me to follow your world based on a single article, but I really like your writing style and I'd love to see more. I hope you'll send me a notification when you publish other articles.
