Streetlamps

What Are They?

Streetlamps play a crucial role in illuminating the streets and pathways as darkness falls. However, not all streetlamps are created equal. Their designs and internal mechanisms differ significantly based on the needs of the various ethnicities and communities they serve.

Utility

Angels of Light

They utilize traditional oil lamps that are fixed to tall poles positioned along the walkways at consistent intervals. Additionally, some of these lamps are suspended from hooks located above or on the sides of residential doors. Interestingly, these lamps are not fueled by oil, but instead by light.
As the sun starts to set, young lamp tenders swiftly move through the town, carefully placing small light sources in each lamp. The residents take care of their own home lamps in a similar manner. Following sunrise, these diligent lamp tenders make another round to collect the light sources from the lamps.

Angels of Fire

In Urbem Ignis, every settlement is adorned with a network of slender cables that traverse the rooftops of structures. These cables are embellished with petite luminous bulbs and large ornamental luminarias. Each luminaire is constructed with a sturdy steel framework and adorned with intricately painted glass embellished with delicate floral decals.
As the sun begins its descent, the inhabitants of Urbem Ignis kindle a small ball of fire and release it along the cable. The fiery sphere transforms into a mesmerizing procession, illuminating each lantern in its wake. Come sunrise, these flickering flames are gently extinguished, ready to be reignited at the next dusk.

Angels of Souls

Similar to Angels of Fire, Angels of Souls use lanterns placed above buildings. But rather than being hung up by cables, these lanterns, known locally as Sky lanterns, float.
The general design is a thin paper shell, which may be from about 30 cm to a couple of metres across, with an opening at the bottom. The opening is usually about 10 to 30 cm wide (even for the largest shells), and is surrounded by a stiff collar that serves to suspend the flame source and keep it away from the walls.
When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, thus lowering its density and causing the lantern to rise into the air. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern sinks back to the ground. Hence, every night, five angels keep watch and relight descending lanterns till daybreak.

Angels of Water

Due to the majority of buildings and residential areas being submerged, traditional lighting methods such as lamps and lanterns are not feasible. As a result, an alternative approach has been developed, involving the encapsulation of bioluminescent insects within glass containers. These remarkable bugs can remain active for as long as 50 hours without interruption, proving to be exceptionally practical for providing semi-long-term illumination.
The improvised bioluminescent lights are strategically positioned on the seabed in front of each building. Particularly significant structures, like cemeteries, the Chief's Palace, and ancient monuments, are adorned with four lights arranged in a manner that creates a protective box around the perimeter of the edifice.
