Maral Gauss Pistol
The Maral Gauss Pistol is an electromagnetic Coilgun developed by the Ekmar corporation roughly three hundred years ago. It is a reliable handgun and is little changed from its original design.
Issues with the old design are still present however. The battery has to be changed independently of the magazine, and the all metallic ammunition is easily stopped by EM shields. It also only holds nine rounds, far less than more modern gauss pistols.
Modern Regalti gauss pistols use what is known as split ammunition, a detachable metallic casing with a ceramic core. As the round leaves the barrel, the metallic casing is blown away, leaving the ceramic bullet to travel down range. The Maral instead uses a solid steel bullet surrounded by a thin lead or copper jacket.
The reason why this weapon is so popular and still in use after three hundred years comes down to its stopping power, at least at short ranges. A single bullet can be stopped by an EM shield, but the shield can be overwhelmed and disabled with enough focused fire, which could potentially allow more overall damage to be done. Not accounting for any shield or armor, most Regalti can be brought down with a single shot. The weapon is also quite easy to repair and ammuniton is widely available. This makes it one of the most popular guns in the star system.
Originally the weapon was designed for the Tevari Empire, but it quickly spread from there. Ship captains originally preferred this weapon and issued them to their crews, but have since used more modern weapons. The weapon was adopted by numerous space colonies as well. Due to the spread of the weapon, it features prominently in popular culture, making an appearance in numerous films and games.

"How do I best describe this weapon? It's chunky and top heavy...actually kind of just heavy in general. Compared to other Regalti weapons, this one actually has some noticeable recoil, and it makes quite a loud sound when all of the capacitors fire off."
- Ryan
"How would you compare it to our Earthly weapons?"
- Dr. Gaille
"Pttf. Hell if I know. Based on my very limited time in the reserves, and, Call of Duty I guess...The Maral Pistol is somewhere between a 1911 and a Desert Eagle?"
- Ryan
"That works. We'll call it a heavy pistol with good stopping power."
- Dr. Gaille
"...you guys are going to ask me about literally every single alien weapon we came across, aren't you?"
- Ryan
"Of course! America needs to know just how dangerous these beings are."
- Dr. Gaille
"How many times do we need to tell you they aren't our enemies?"
- Ryan
"that's for us to judge. Now, let's move on to the next weapon..."
- Dr. Gaille
