Chiren
(Fire Fruit)

Chiren are an invasive species originally introduced from seeds brought from Earth and are from a variety of Chili Pepper. Chiren is derived/corrupted from the Nahuatl word chīlli. Similar to Fire Leaves, Chiren is filled with Capsaicin which leaves a burning flavor. Despite being an invasive species on Collena for around 500 years, it has been integrated in Fevarik cuisine as well as foods from other nations. Often while fruits are chopped in dishes, dried or whole, though crushed varieties of Chiren are also used for seasoning.

Jonune
(Multiberry)

Jonune.png
Jonune, or 'Multi-berries', are small, bite sized berries. They grow on small shrubs, and occasionally very large trees. For all intents and purposes in the Cairn Sector, jonune are like bramble berries on earth (raspberries, blackberries and such) especially in taste and color, though they do look different in some ways. The Fevarik use them in a large number of foods.

Ekone
(Voidberry)

This is a type of Jonune or multiberry. These berries are so high in anti-oxidants that they are almost black in color. They have a strong sweet and bitter flavor. It is commonly used to flavor meat dishes in Fevarik Cuisine, made into juice, or processed and made into various violet colored dyes for clothing.

Kirue
(Core Fruit)

Kirue, or 'Core Fruits', are slightly larger than fist sized fleshy fruits with a large seed in the center. Colors can range from yellow to green and cyan and flavors can be anywhere from mildly sweet to sour. To a human, the taste might most resemble a pear. The seed is tasty if boiled properly to remove toxins, but the fruit is what is most often eaten.

Mierue
(Bouquet Fruit)

Mierue are small spherical, acidic fruits that grow in arid coastal climates. It is normally dark green in color when fully ripe. It is very similar in composition to grapes on Earth, Mierue is used to make 'Velan' (a word for Regalti Wine), and traces of this wine have been discovered at archaeological sites tens of thousands of years old.

Levarue
(Umbra Berry)

These fruits are the size of a grape to the size of a human fist, dark violet, and almost completely black in visible light, but glow brightly in UV. The outer edges of the fruit are transparent, which makes it resemble a solar eclipse. It has a complex flavor, being sweet, sour, and savory at the same time. This fruit is one of many hundreds found in the Umbra Jungle, but it has yet to be cultivated for widespread use. To a human, they taste like a tomato.

Sasara
(Fire Melon)

Sasara is a word for any species of fruit that is large, round, and has a thick skin that smells slightly of acetone. Not all species are edible. Shorrane
(Blueberry)

Shor Berries are similar in physical appearance to Blueberries on Earth, but like many foods the Regalti love, are quite sour. They also have a taste closer to that of Lemons rather than blueberries. Vrasirue
(Skin Fruit)

Fruit with a thick, bumpy skin and pulpy inside. This fruit tastes juicy and sour and have high concentrations of citric acid. It tends to grow in lower latitudes as early autumn frost can kill the fruits. Varieties can be dark cyan to white in color. In UV light, unripe fruit reflects small red colored dots all over its skin. To a human, it will most resemble a Valencia Orange, except vrasirue has a slightly grassy flavor.

Xarn
(Euphoria)

Xarn Blossoms are a flower-shaped fruit derived from plants found in many temperate forests across Collena. They have a sweet or sour flavor depending on type, but the fruits are more well known because of a chemical that interrupts a Regalti's color changing ability, which can turn them 'rainbow color'. The fruits don't actually taste any better than any other on this list, but some Regalti swear by its amazing flavor.

Yorane
(Helioberries)

Berry from the depths of the Umbra Jungle on the Greknil Continent. Also called Helium Fruits because they are filled with large pockets of gas, usually helium. Biting into one of these berries causes them to explode, sending the sweet and sour flavors of the berry to every corner of your mouth. To the Regalti, they taste amazing.

Grains, Grasses, and Seeds

Name

Picture

Description

Evol
(Wheat)

Widespread grain, grown and eaten for thousands of years. Evoli is physically similar to Wheat on Earth. There are a number of species and hybrids that are cultivated and turned into bread, cakes, cookies, and noodles. like many civilizations in the universe, the Regalti chose a type of grass as their very first domesticated crop.
((Image Credit: Franz Eugen Köhler, Wikimedia Commons))

Iltarin
(Bitter One)

More commonly known as "Vusinor Hair" because the long leaves resemble the structure of the hair of the sentient Vusinor species. It is a type of grass that grows in large patches all over the middle and upper latitudes of Collena. The grass has a bitter flavor when eaten and is actually quite liked by Vusinor that visit Collena, though they don't understand why its common name is Vusinor Hair. Regalti usually use the seeds for specialty breads.

Oten
(Rice)

Widespread grain, grown and eaten for thousands of years. Closest analogue to Earth would be rice, which is grown in a similar way. The seeds are often a brown, green or cyan color. They are about the same size as rice grains but usually curved slightly. Genetically modified versions of this food is quite easy to grow, even in space, so food and drinks made from this are found almost everywhere wherever Regalti live.

Selen
(Maize)

Maize.png
Or Corn. This cereal grain is an invasive species on Collena and Senon, and was introduced around 500 years ago. The color of this variety is distinct, and is due to growing conditions on the alien world. Many Regalti love the unique taste of the grains and even learned how to prepare it from one of the many human tribes they interacted with on Earth, said to be a precursor to the Muskogee people. The word Selen is derived/corrupted either from the words Sefke or Selu, similar words from unrelated native languages.

Talu
(Acorn)

Harvested from Tihala Trees which are not native to Collena. Acorns are often dried and ground into flour, used in making some types of breads and cookies. It isn't often used for consumption by Regalti, though the sapient Vusinor Species adores the bitter taste of the acorns. Many livestock species on Collena also readily consume acorns when available.

Ugolin
(Instant Stop)

A Plant with edible legumes. They are quite bitter, but they are used to create a type of bread with a stringy texture that Regalti love. The name for the plant translates roughly to 'instant stop' for its ability to cause irregular heartbeats in allergic Regalti, just by smelling raw seeds. Simple medication eliminates allergic reactions today but it was an issue in the past.

Akina
(Tiny Floret)

Also called Grenaya (literally "Violet Flower"). This plant has a large flower head with thousands of tiny flowers. The plant is harvested just before blooming. It can be consumed raw but is most often cooked in meat dishes. Grenaya is very similar to broccoli in form, but in taste it is incredibly acidic and sour. Regalti love the taste and it can be found in many different dishes across Collena.

Drekaya
(Wine Flowers)

Also called Hate Flowers or Love Flower, These hand-sized flowers are called different things depending on the culture. It depends on the cultures perception of alcohol because these flowers use symbiotic yeast to produce and store the stuff. It was an evolutionary defense mechanism against various pests. Not actually a viable source of alcohol as the flowers take years to bloom, and alcohol can be produced much more quickly and easily from other plants. The whole flower is often placed on top on a wine glass and it is consumed with the wine.

Jorid
(Fire Salts)
(Pepper)

Ranging from tall bushed to short trees, these plants bear thousands of tiny fruits. Unripe fruit and seeds are dried and ground together to make a spice called Fire Salts, with a taste similar to the many varieties of pepper found on Earth (black pepper, pink pepper, etc.). The Fruit itself can be left to fully ripen. When the seeds are removed, the fruits are used to make a sweet beverage that has a slight spicy flavor to it.

Luneli
(Fresh Leaf)

Mentha Portrait.png
Luneli is often used in various dishes and drinks. It has a smell and taste similar to a mint plant on Earth. Dozen of varieties exist and different types have different uses. Several specific types are used as ingredients in perfume as Regalti are known to be irresistibly attracted to the scent.

Marketh
(Tea)

Marketh is the Regalti equivalant to tea leaves, used mainly by the Fevarik and other cultures of the Kenerif Continent. There are eleven varieties of this tea, all created by preparing the evergreen leaves in various ways. Some varieties are made by roasting and grinding the plant's seeds then mixing that in as well. Marketh is consumed due to its high caffeine content. The flavor can be anywhere from grainy to smooth depending on how it's prepared.

Tirdeli
(Fire Leaf)

Tirdeli is a type of herb with violet leaves and a cyan stem. It evolved the compound Capsaicin everywhere in the plant to prevent grazing animals from eating it. The fruit is spicy but also extremely bitter and isn't used, but the leaves are often dried and ground into seasoning. It is easy to grow in space and has minimal water requirements. On Collena, several cultures have replaced its use in food with that of the invasive Fire Fruit species..

Yoraya
(Cloud Flowers)

Tiny flowers that spend their entire life cycle in the sky, hundreds to thousands of meters above the planet. Almost invisible to Regalti, they play a large part in the sky's ecosystem. Occasionally, they can spawn in very large numbers, which can be anywhere from annoying to outright deadly. Most Cloud Flowers are eaten whole or just the fruit-like center is used. Generally extremely bitter, Cloud Flowers are also used to make Regalti Wine.

Roots and Stems

Name

Picture

Description

Alon
(Onion)

The bulbs of this plant are consumed due to its sharp pungent flavor that turns into a sweeter flavor when cooked. The bulbs range from colorless to blue to red. This plant is native to temperate regions on the planet Collena but except for subtle differences in color and flavor it would be impossible to tell the difference between this plant and onions on Earth.
((no image yet))

Dalakolm
(Bottle Root)

The largest of these violet roots an hold up to a liter of water and require almost no effort to grow. In empty desert regions, these plants are a godsend if you find them. Dalakolm are often eaten raw. In wetter regions of Collena, they are chopped up and added to salads and various other dishes. The taste is similar to a cucumber. The rest of the plant is often dried and ground into a concentrated seasoning that tastes the same but stronger.
((Made by me with Midjourney))

Evalim
(Seed Roots)

The roots of this plant break apart easily when pulled out of the ground. This prevents grazing animals from eating the whole plant. The Regalti have grown tougher varieties that can be pulled out of the ground whole, then broken apart easily by freezing it, creating smaller 'seeds'. These are then added to salads and eaten raw, or boiled and cooked with various other dishes. The taste of this plant is somewhat similar to that of a radish.
((Made by me with Midjourney))

Selteli

This vegetable grows in a tight grouping of stems with short leaves at the end, though there are varieties that are more leaves than stems. The leaves are often cut off and used in salads while the stems are seasoned and then fried or grilled. There isn't a strong taste associated with this plant, so it can end up tasting like whatever it was prepared with. One traditional Fevarik dish involves mixing the stems with Isone and Ryesone grease with salt and vinegar, then frying it.

Yarnue
(Sturdy Root)

Short plant with a sturdy root. The root is light brown to red colored, and can be eaten raw, though it is often boiled to soften it up. It is usually chopped up and cooked with sugar in a glaze that is then spread over meat or grain dishes. Closest analogue to Earth would be carrots in taste, function, and appearance

Other

Including Algae, Fungi, Trees, minerals like salt, and anything else that doesn't fit into the other sections.

Name

Picture

Description

Algae

Easily the most common form of food consumed the Stellar Regalti living in space, Algae is harvested from a Algae Bioreactor. The Cellulose and sugars are then harvested and separated, then can be loaded into a Food Printer. Combined with different taste and texture chemicals, as well as artificially made macronutrients like proteins and fats, you can turn Algae into just about any food you desire with any texture or taste you want.

Asturdel
(Veil Trees)

A Type of Sphere Tree that grows in warm climates all over Collena. Its leaves and flowers can be meters long, giving the appearance of a veil or cover around the tree, hiding the trunk from view. It doesn't produce edible fruit. Its sap has an extremely high sugar content and is known to be comsumed by various animals. The Regalti turn the tree's sap into drinks and use the wood for construction materials.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Sugar Caps

The Regalti have several raw foods they use for the sugar value, such as Veil Trees and Sugar Caps. Sugar caps are a fungi that occasionally release sweet smelling juices to attract grazing animals. Regalti harvest the caps of these mushrooms, boiling them and drawing out the large amounts of pure sugar from within. The caps themselves are also quite tasty and can be eaten raw. Cooking them turns the color violet and changes the texture entirely. Sugar Caps are also a staple of the Stellar Regalti diet because they are much easier to grow in space than Veil Trees are.

Salt

Naturally occuring mineral found all over the world. This is added in some amount to nearly every single non-sweet dish. Salt is usually gathered from evaporation ponds near the oceans or from underground mines. A variety called Ancestor Salt is a special type of blue-violet halite that occurs in the mountains surrounding the Ancestor Desert region. It is often used in Fevarik dishes on religious holidays.

Animals

Name

Picture

Description

Agimar

Agimar Portrait.png
The Agimar is known to be a very calm fish that floats peacefully in the water, even next to voracious predators. Bitter tasting algae grows under their scales and in their skin which turns away most predators (but not Regalti). An Agimar's green meat is said to be slightly bitter but deliciously flakey when properly cooked.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Cancer

The Stellar Regalti, being in space, can't often afford the space to raise animals for meat, and shipping meat from surface worlds is expensive. Their solution involves undying cancerous muscle tissue harvested from various animals. Under controlled condition, this muscle tissue doesn't mutate further and can grow quickly and indefinitely. That steak you ate at the The Regolith on your way to Collena? Tasted good? It was cancer.

Ekandra
(Ichthyosaur)

Ekandra are water lizards with a fish-like body. They range in lengths from a few centimeters to a few meters. River varieties are most often caught and consumed by Regalti, having a taste and texture very similar to that of Alligator. Ocean varieties used to be comercially harvested but that was hundreds of years ago. The eggs of any species is also consumed, but are expensive and protected by regulation.
((Image Drawn by me))

Greater Galin
(Poultry)

Greater Galin are a variety of Jinani. They can grow up to 2 meters in length and weigh up to 75kg. This variety of bird is less commonly used for food today due to its similarity to Domesticated Galin kept as pets, but was much more common in the past. The meat has a stringy, textured taste. Dark meat is greasier and white meat is dry. A human would confuse this bird's taste (and appearance of the head) for chicken, but they'd also likely confuse Ikandis for chicken too, or really, any bird on Collena.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Isone
(Beef)

Hysovi Portrait.png
Hysovi are a large Family of quadrupedal ruminant mammals. One particular species, the Isone, has been bred for thousands of years to be the primary form of livestock for Regalti living on Collena. The taste is remarkably similar to that of Cattle on Earth, which seems to be a constant in the universe, as the Vusinor have a similar animal in the Shintrokail, and the Maorians have the Fumarole Serpent.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Ikandis
(poultry)

Ikandis are a genera of bird on Collena. They are herding, grazing type anaimals. This bird is very commonly kept as livestock and harvested for its eggs and meat. Ikandi has a stronger flavor than Galin, but is also drier. Ikandis also form the basis for an 'artificial poultry' consumed by Stellar Regalti.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Jellyfish

Balloon Jellies and sometimes Skyshells are hunted and consumed by Regalti. The most common ways of consuming jellyfish involve slicing the non-stinging tentacles into thin noodles and making pastas and soups. Another popular food is Jellyfish Jerky, made by simply killing the animal, covering it with salts and spices, and allowing it to dry in the sun or in an oven.
((Image Credit: Ernst Haeckel, Wikimedia commons))

Ryeson

Ryesons are a large horned mammal native to northern tundras of Collena. They spread further south over the centuries, but are rather difficult to hunt and can't be domesticated. Meat from this animal is rare and is only eaten on special holidays. The taste of this meat has an uncanny resemblance to pork and preparation is done in similar ways..
((Made by me with Midjourney))

SephKarni
(MoonFish)

These fish get their name from their tendency to leap out of the water during full moons. These fish roam the oceans in very large numbers, feasting on just about anything. They can also grow quite large. The closest analogue to an Earth fish in taste would be an Albacore though they are closest in appearance to flying fish. While large numbers of them exist on their native world of Collena, the fish also exists in the oceans of at least three other worlds in the Delvi System.
((Image Drawn by Me))

Tree Urchin

Spiny, globular animal, related to animals that resembles Earth's Echinoidea. Much like their sea based relatives, Tree Urchins are relatively sessile and have a number of spines or spikes protecting them. They tend to climb to the tops of trees in the summer to absorb sunlight for parasitic algae on their spines, which also converts food for the urchin itself. Tasty when cooked, they don't taste like sea urchins, but more like an aquatic reptile.
