The Shattered Plains is a large geographical feature located in the souther portion of the Continent of Kenerif, located entirely within the Natin of Lathin. It is bordered to the north by the The Sunken Lands. It is a large system of canyons, limestone caverns, and lava tubes, that provides ecosystems for animals normally never found in this part of the world.
The Plains above are crosscrossed by a number of canyons. There are geographical features like Mesas that are isolated by other areas by thousand foot cliffs and several dozen kilometers. The majority of Regalti in this area live here, keeping themselves away from the rest of the world. There are a number of isolated monasteries and temples, with several towns on the larger flat areas of the plains. Shinore is one such settlement and is also the capital city of the region.
Down below on the canyon floor, most of it is flooded as a result of the sinking continent to the north. On the sides of these canyon walls are tens of million of individual caverns and lava tubes from long extinct volcanoes.
Due to the movement of the air currents and the geography of individual caves, some caverns are perpetually covered in ice, the entrances to these cave spit out near or below freezing air even in the middle of summer, allowing creatures from sub-polar climates to live. A number of creatures went extinct after the last glacial period about seven thousand years ago, everywhere except for here, where animals that would normally outcompete them don't exist.
On the complete opposite side of the climate spectrum, there are some caverns, mostly lava tubes that, due to the air currents and the shapes of the caverns, have never recieved any rainfall from the plains above. This turns the canyon and caverns below into extremely harsh deserts, and some areas are wastelands where no living thing can stay.
When the War of Purges ended in the year 260 B.E. (Before Exodus), there were a number of Bevarian loyalists than went into the twisting labyrinths of the Shattered Plains, hiding for decades, conducting guerilla style attacks on the military installations in the area owned by the nation of Lathin. It took nearly a century to fully root them all out, and by the time they were finally disarmed and forced to leave or join the nation of Lathin, many had settled and formed entire towns in the caverns, connected by secret underground passageways, and by air routes invisible to radar systems.
