Disease and Sickness

As divinity faded from the realm of Cairne, the peoples that lived there, once fully reliant upon the intervention of their patron deities for all manner of healing, were suddenly found to be without a source of healing. Thousands perished in the wake of that loss, and as the Wars of Human Attrition waged on the surface and the dwarves' desperate defense efforts flailed at the darkness underground, the number of dead rose swiftly. Many perished to simple infection or a lack of proper wound care. Many of the more simple medical practices existed, but with the complete loss of divine magic for the purpose of healing, the races of cairne found themselves forced to become fully reliant on their mortal intellect and skill. With the founding of the Order of Benevolents, research and experimentation began, each failure and victory recorded and studied, slowly growing a vast body of knowledge within the newfound realm of science. The mortal wonders that came out of this time were world shaking events that changed the face of the world. The Order of Benevolents thrives and grows constantly, becoming not just a common mainstay in every society, but a neutral force within all realms that stitches together civilizations just as well as they might stitch a wound. This respect is not lost on them, and as the revered health bringers and life savers, the people of Cairne look to them for answers when the unseen and virulent dangers come to bear upon them, slaying king and urchin alike. Disease is the great equalizer, and with the advent of the Blight, the microbial dangers of the world is only strengthened as the otherworldly energies of the Void manifests in new and horrific ways, forcing the stalwart defenders of the Order to step to and fight back harder, weilding a mixture of science and faith like a mighty hammer against the unseen enemies of all life.
