Beneath the surface of Cairne lay a vast and sprawling empire crafted over centuries by the Dwarves. As the raw and untamed energies of the blight came crashing down upon the planet, the underside of its lands was possibly the hardest hit. Without the sun to tame them, the creatures from that dark place were nearly free to roam and spread unchecked save for one glimmer of burning hope...the dwarves themselves.

The stout dwellers of the underground regions fought with all they had against the rising tide of destruction that was now upon them. pushed back again and again, suffering terrible losses and with each defeat, another piece of their precious empire was gone. Pushed back into their ancestral capital of Grundhome, the dwarves made their final stand. A mixture of brilliant tactical expertise and crafty engineering allowed them to finally push back and hold the line, but the cost in lives was substantial, and their numbers and resources were dwindling fast. It was on this fateful day the rift occured between the clans. The split was over the simple premise of duty or survival. In a hurried but extremely heated discourse between clan leaders, the dwarves were split asunder and those who sought survival left the underhome for the mountains above forming the Culvarkt, while the those that remained to fight, duty-bound to protect their world from the invaders became the Fouvienians.
