Aquaducts and Sewers

Originally people in Calandyrion would walk long distances to obtain water and would dump sewerage in a dump outside of town. This all changed with the development of the aqueduct.

About 100 years ago Baddon Nist played with a way to bring water to a central location in his town of Acrasus that involved using hollow bamboo tubes to move water from the river to fill a cistern. While rudimentary it demonstrated the possibility for other uses like irrigation. Sadly, townspeople found the upkeep of the tubes to be time consuming and it fell into disrepair. It stayed that way until Coilean Ó Lapain, the Head Sage of Smetium, saw the invention and its usefulness and thereupon improved upon the original idea that brought the practice in the cities.

Leaders of capital cities noted the usefulness of aqueducts in preventing diseases such as dysentery.

Utility

Used to bring clean water into the cities and to removed sewerage to the ocean or a sage distance from town. Also, used in the irrigation of local farmlands.

Manufacturing

Aqueducts are now built by digging gullies and lining with a mixture of sand, gravel and lime or ash that hardens preventing the water from seeping into the ground.

Inventor(s)

Baddon Nist, was a local uneducated tinkerer. His invention found a solution for getting water from one place to another. Despite the spread of his invention throughout the lands Baddon died ridiculed and penniless.

Access & Availability

Widely used in cities and large towns near water.

Complexity

The implementation of aqueducts began slowly bringing water in and taking sewerage out of the city. As their use in farming became more widespread the complexity of the systems increased. The rich and noble classes began using them to create in residence toilets and public bathhouses. [/]
