Eitar's Anvil

And so I leave my greatest creation, my Anvil, to the good and wise people of the mighty city of Cabyra, to be theirs in perpetuity. Upon those noble folk I place with greatest confidence all my hopes and dreams for my legacy.
— Eitar Scheppen, Last Will and Testament

An enormous anvil, as large as a wagon, this artifact belongs to the Republic of Cabyra and is their most treasured possession. The Anvil is capable of animating suits of armour, giving them motion and a crude intelligence. These automatons are Cabyra's primary line of defence against all threats. The Anvil rests in a secure and secret location somewhere beneath the city of Cabyra, and is presumably protected by all manner of guards and defences. Without the Anvil Cabyra would be extremely vulnerable in any future conflicts.

The Anvil was created around a century ago by a Sindai artificer called Eitar Scheppen. He was one of the gnomes working on Sindal's long-standing project to emulate the Shael and create artificial life. Unfortunately for his dreams the Anvil could bestow only the crudest approximation of intelligence. Eitar died less than two years later, never having manged to improve on his creation. In his will he stated that the Anvil should be given to Cabyra, which took everyone by surprise as Eitar had no ties whatsoever to Cabyra - he had never even been to the Republic - and had never been heard expressing any particular sympathy to Cabyra's situation. The Sindai government objected, claiming that the Anvil was necessary to keep for Sindal's protection and to further their artificial life ambitions. Before the Sindai could secure the Anvil a Cabyran team (which just so happened to be in the area, and on the ball enough to react in time, and capable enough to transport the enormous and heavy Anvil) extracted the artifact to Republic territory.

The Republic steadfastly refused to hand the Anvil back to Sindal, using Eitar's will as justification. The Sindai government did not take this well and imposed a variety of trade sanctions on Cabyra, as well as cancelling various cooperative research ventures. However, as time has passed the animosity between the two nations has faded (helped by Sindal making further strides towards artificial intelligence that have rendered the Anvil unnecessary), and now the Anvil is firmly established as a Cabyran possession.
