Scholars
Books?? Why would I care what's in a dusty old book?
An astute reader will have noticed the epigraphs and other quotes from some person or piece of writing from Calcerun. Some sources appear only once, while others appear on multiple pages. Below is a list of the more prominent of those scholars and other figures who have contributed to multiple articles.
History, Politics & War
Toran Medazak
The Lessons of the Past; The Nations of NalunaraA dwarf from Khazarak, Toran is a renowned scholar of history and politics. He has studied in libraries and archives across Nalunara and beyond, and boasts an enormously deep understanding of the continent's history. He is also surprisingly well-informed about current events. Toran is very intelligent and also rather cynical, with a dry and sarcastic wit. It is unusual for a male Karzat to be pursuing such an intellectual profession.
Warchief Grumbar Linebreaker
Commentary on the Great WarA hobgoblin army commander in service of the Kwal Dominion, Warchief Grumbar is the second most senior officer in the entire Dominion. He is best known as a famed war hero, but (as the hobgoblins expect from their commanders) is also a scholar of war. He is known to have strong views on the Alliance and it's self-proclaimed moral superiority. Given his rank and upbringing it's quite possible he's biased.
General Carric Teinithra
My RegretsOnce a general in service of the Grand Alliance of Free Peoples, General Teinithra ended his successful military career in disgrace. His unwillingness to follow controversial orders against a Dominion town led to his force being routed. He left the army after shouting out the entire high command and went into self-imposed exile. From his exile he has written of his reasons for his actions and where he thinks the Alliance is going wrong. A cynic might claim that he is merely belatedly trying to justify his failure.
Magic
Ikki Deepseer
Surviving the Desolation (with Osborn Brightmoon); Analysis of the MaddeningThe chancellor of the Autumnal Tower, Ikki is a male aarakocra invested in the study of magic. A renowned magical researcher and theoretical arcanist, Ikki has written a number of specialist tomes concerning his findings and discoveries. Most of his written works are almost entirely indecipherable to the average reader.
Gods
Hethress Pfaphnyrennish
On DivinityA dragonborn from Ormir, Hethress has devoted her life to studying and understanding the gods. She is known to be a devout and respectful follower of The Pantheon, but this has not stopped her from trying to learn more about the facts behind the myths. She has little truck with flowery language or dancing around a subject. Her writings are plain and to-the-point, and she is frequently pretty blunt in her views and assessments. No non-dragonborn has the faintest idea how to pronounce her second name.
Lady Sabil Gare
Divinity DebunkedA highborn Taranian, Lady Gare was extremely critical of the gods and their claims. She denounced them as false deities, lambasted them for not helping the world more, and deemed them unsuitable to render judgement on mortals. Her books, which contained furious but articulate and well-reasoned arguments to support her viewpoint, have been deemed heretical by just about every religious organisation on the planet, and great effort has been spent on trying to remove the books from circulation. Lady Gare died in mysterious circumstances on the crossing to Nalunara.
Exploration & Geography
Osborn Brightmoon
The Lost Places; Through Snow and Ice; With Tarp and Towel; Surviving the Desolation (with Ikki Deepseer)A renowned halfling explorer, Osborn has been just about everywhere in Nalunara and it's surrounding islands, as well as a number of locations on other continents. He is always keen to give advice and tips to other explorers, and to tell the many stories he has accumulated on his travels - though he is up-front that there are some tales he will not tell. He is not above exaggerating to make a story better.
Animals & Ecology
Sariel Liadon
From Ankhegs to Zombies; The Fair Folk UnglamouredA wood elf from Arvalia, Sariel spent her life in wonder and amazement at the creatures and ecology of Calcerun. Her books are well-researched and largely factual, though somewhat full of gushy excitement. She wrote her books to appeal to as many readers as possible, and they have been criticised as being broad but shallow. Claims that she was prejudiced against dwarves are completely unfounded.
