Sapphire Cove; Sun, Surf, and Sea Monsters
Welcome to Sapphire Cove. Feel free to remove your boots, as sand will surely find its way inside them, and feel the sun baked stone roads beneath your feet. Listen as cries of sea gulls are drowned out by the calling of vendors, beckoning you to inspect their selection of shelled, scaled, or tentacled creatures for you to taste. Smell the fragrance of magnolia trees combating the smell of fish, and watch as children run up to you to sell unique looking sea shells for exorbitant prices.
A large and almost perfectly circular cove fills the center of the city square, which lies toward the shore. At the very center of the circle is a manmade island complete with a lighthouse that doubles as a watch tower. The opening to the ocean is large enough for ships to sail into. Ships will enter the cove and loop around the watchtower clockwise. After dropping off or picking up cargo and passengers, it circles back out to the sea. The cove's entrance faces West and lies between two short towers complete with battlements. At each tower starts a wall that runs away from the entrance. An enormous and sturdy gate with mounted spikes runs along the wall of the northwestern tower, which can slide across the water to the southwestern tower, keeping out any unwanted ships.
The main resource of this town is, as one might have guessed, fish. While pearls are also gathered from shallow reefs and certain sea snails are crushed to make purple dye, fish is the main staple of Sapphire Cove. The men kiss their wives goodbye in the mornings and set sail to go fishing. They return home with nets heaving with fish, which are then gutted, cleaned, salted, and shipped throughout the kingdom. So while you thank the seven saints before your meal, be sure to thank the people of Sapphire Cove for the salmon on your plate.
