Atollis
Atollis is a country that exists both above and below the sea made up primarily of tritons. It thrives off a deeply caste-based society relying on a stringent breeding program for their tritons that places most of its native citizens in their destined places at birth. Atollis is ruled by a noble caste in their underwater cities with great power and long lives. Many view the nobility in a nearly godlike light among their people. They use processes similar to genetic manipulation and anatomical modification through magic and science to create exceptional soldiers, leaders, intellectuals, artists, crafters, and more within their underwater civilization, but have kept the workings of these processes top secret.
Structure
The kingdom of Atollis exists both above and below sea level, with most of its inhabitants living beneath the waves. Those who live underwater often have higher stations than those who dwell on the islands that above, and it is where the ruling caste live.
The caste system of Atollis separates their society dependent on the grouped professions of the people and how important they are viewed toward society. For the merfolk of Atollis, the castes are hereditary and genetic, the nation having modified bloodlines to have greater traits associated with the caste they belong to. For everyone else, the castes become hereditary depending on the profession born into. Movement through the castes can be done laterally, but rarely vertically.
Ular. The Ular are members of he ruler caste. They are comprised of nobles - the highest of them being the royal family and emperor - governors, and generals. They are hereditary and always merfolk (tritons, aquatic elves, etc.). They have been modified by genetic and some magical means to live longer lives, be born with magical capabilities, have higher reasoning capabilities, and claim immunity to most common toxins.
Lumba. The intellectual and spiritual caste is composed of scholars and scientists, priests and administrators, and artists. Few non-merfolk are granted this status.
Hui. The strong caste is denoted by their positions in society requiring more brawn and physical skill than intellectual prowess. It is made up of warriors (the greatest population in this caste), artisans and tradespeople (smiths, woodworkers, farmers etc.). This caste often works under the supervision of one of the Lumba caste (such as an artisan working under an engineer or architect). Most of the warriors of this cast are born and bred in the ocean. Smiths and metalurgists are one of the few jobs in this caste that are both prized and necessary to have above water, therefore one of the highest ranks a non-merfolk can achieve.
Ikan. The laborer caste consists of those who perform unspecialized or general labor such as farming, fishing and construction.
Raksa. The merchant caste sells products harvested and made by the locals. They are seen as the lowest of the castes because they do not provide any goods themselves to the society. Their living is hard and are usually located in cities in their own wards. However, increased connections to foreign exports have caused some merchants to become one of the wealthiest people in their society.
