Matericum
Matericum is an ore that is mainly used in Cybertech, because of it's compatibility with the metahuman body. The ore reduces the healing time needed after a cybertech implant by 25%, but it increases the cost by 20%.
An unexpected discovery
In 1998, the Krupp Corporation discovered a strange vein of ore in a depleted diamond mine. This ore is now known as Matericum, but was mistaken for a strange improvement to diamonds.
Matericum, with its distinctive, deep black hue and the the deep red veins captured the interest of the Krupp Corporation's experts. While experts initially examined the ore believing it to be oddly altered diamonds, they discovered the properties that make it so valuable in today's world. During the research, the experts quickly discovered that the ore was not even carbon-based, which quickly disproved the diamond theory.
Instead, the unknown ore proved to be eminently conductive to electrical impulses, but difficult to form. Although the ore was thus of great interest for the Group's technology, it was considered absolutely unusable for the beginning. As a result, the corporation's research focused on developing technologies that would allow the ore to be processed efficiently.
The Matericum monopoly
Over the next few years, the Krupp Group bought depleted diamond mines around the world to secure sole access to the matericum. At the same time, new techniques that allowed processing were patented and kept under lock and key.
In 2015, the Krupp Group launched the first chips that had Matericum lines. The speed of data transmission was incomparably higher than with the previously used conductors. Krupp then began to expand research into medical applications in the new cybertech implants. The first direct neural interface using Matericum came to market in 2022. Since then, the Krupp Group has been considered a leader in DNI technology.
However, the Krupp Corporation's monopoly on Matericum was not without controversy. Rival corporations sought to replicate or acquire the precious ore, leading to corporate espionage, conflicts, and underground markets. The demand for Matericum soared, as its value expanded beyond the realm of technology, reaching into the intricate web of political and economic power in Calyria.
As the years passed, Matericum became even more important. In the wake of new technomagical developments, Matericum proved its value not only in Cybertech, but also in magic fetishes and artifacts. Matericum-infused cyberware became a symbol of prestige and power, driving societal transformations and sparking ethical debates around the fusion of the organic and the artificial.
Matericum today
In the present day, Matericum remains a sought-after resource, with mining operations expanding to meet the ever-growing demand. The Krupp Corporation continues to be a dominant force, leveraging their early discovery to maintain their position at the forefront of cybertech innovation. Yet, the legacy of Matericum extends far beyond the boundaries of any one corporation, shaping and pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in the realms of magic and technology.
Matericum stands as a testament to the Krupp Corporation's visionary spirit and the convergence of magic and technology in Calyria. Its discovery in 1998 set in motion a chain of events that would forever change the world, driving progress, and igniting a new age of cybernetic marvels.
