Gatrelix (gætɹɛˈlɪks)

Alien dudes. Built The Artifact at some point in their distant past, but since it didn't work for them they left it alone and it's just a sacred doodad. Well, sort of sacred. It's one of the few pieces of tech that they don't know how to use but they also didn't destroy it and it still sort of works because the glowy lights come on so they're exceedingly proud of it.   Historically the Gatrelix fought each other a lot, and a lot of their monolith elements come from the fact that they are suspicious. Not a lot of spies or stuff, but they didn't have the Geneva Accords exactly so they didn't really codify a lot of the rules we have around war. Didn't go quite as far as we did, but also they don't have a lot of points about fair play and all so they always expect people to cheat them and sucker punch them.   Diplomacy with these people can be a challenge because they expect you to go for the low blow, and they themselves will literally do that if they find themselves at all annoyed. They don't hold a grudge so much as add the information to a mental list of "yeah I knew that guy would do that" so you kind of can't win with them. They do the things, they expect you to do the things, and it's nothing personal this is just life.   As such, they've had a lot of civilizations rise and fall, and have a very rich archeological history since they go through a lot of cycles.   Why does the Federation want them to join? Because their view of personal possessions works pretty well with the whole no-money thing and it's a lot of communal property since people would just take it for themselves anyway. Their technology is advanced to the correct level. Probably it's mostly just that everyone past a certain level needs to be in the Federation, kind of a completionist award, but also they do have some pretty great security systems that disable but don't kill, and that record so you know who took the thing.   Planet style is pretty average Canadian temperate forest. Lots of tall trees so that you can keep an eye on your neighbor. Probably a lot of treehouses as well. Seems like it might be a pretty nice place to live. The Gatrelix are pretty close to human except they don't deal well with extreme temperature changes or bad weather at all.   Their appearance is a mottled skin, rather like nice granite, with the little speckles of color mixed in. Ridges along their jaws (developed as an external visual of their reinforced bone structure from all the punching in the face). Hair sticks straight out from the head in a circle, kind of like sticks, usually in colors that go along with the skin.   Strengths and weaknesses? If I needed species stats to create a character, I would give bonuses to Fitness (for the bones), Daring (they're fairly aggressive), Presence (they're standouts wherever they go). Talents would be something like "Don't hold grudges" where they get a bonus d20 for working with someone who has previously betrayed them, and "Headbutts as a culture" has that particular attack be more successful.   Their ships are rounded, a lot like the Artifact. Kind of on the smaller side, not all that maneuverable, and only one weapons array. If you fight them, you're probably going to have to work harder not to shoot them down.
Federation yes/no meter
They don't trust very deeply as a culture, and they dislike politics and dishonesty. They'll haggle and generally don't understand "fair" but they really don't understand outright lying.   It's not just getting them to want to join, it's getting them to understand what kind of people they'll be working with in the Federation, and learning to adapt to the culture there. So it's also about "do we think we can fit in here" as much as "we want to join".   +1 to yes for the opening mission, since the players didn't play them false at all and admitted what happened. Making sure that they knew the whole thing was a mistake and was dealt with.
