The Vales

The Basics

The Vales broke free from the Kingdom of Fraine at the same time Norlund did and they're in about the same shape. Thinly populated and under extreme pressure from the humanoid tribes that are pressing toward the Loch region. They are a fiercely independent People who are loathe to be folded into any other territory, including Norlund, but sadly, they are slowly being overwhelmed by the dark forces surging against them.   Part of this has to do with the fact that “The Vales” are actually five separate Vales, each ruled independently. If a strong leader could unite the Vales, they still may not be able to resist the tides of darkness in the long run, but it would certainly buy them time for a more permanent solution to be found, but the Valelanders resist even this, and in that regard, their stubborn insistence on going their own way is very much working against them. For now, they’re keeping the dark forces at bay, but only just. They are literally one lost battle away from an existential threat.

Prominent People & Places

As to political leaders, none the leap out. Each Vale is ruled by a Lord, but again, none are particularly strong or noteworthy, and dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Vales is high and growing as tensions rise, so the people there are apt to toss out their current leadership and replace them, which happens with some frequency. Although the leaders of the Vale call themselves Lords, it’s more accurate to say that the Vales are a Yeomen, or Freeholders, who chaff under rulers whose leadership is too firm.

Cardinal Patricolo McKenny (Life Priest, J’honsa)

The one notable figure you’re likely to encounter in the Vales is Cardinal McKenny, one of the Free, now living in Misty Vale after serving with distinction in the Great War. Quiet and soft-spoken, his presence provides a sense of calm and security in the fractious Vales, and he can often be found on the front lines of the latest conflict, tending to the needs of the wounded and when necessary, smiting foul creatures himself. Cardinal McKenny is no slouch in battle!

Plot Threads

Uniting the fractious Vales and standing against the rising tides of darkness is classic D&D gaming. Like Norlund, this could be an incredibly fun campaign.
