Sensen
TL;DR: The Sensen, or "Ice Wyrms" are the only known warm-blooded reptile in Canton. This is essential for their survival, as they live in ice hollows and caves.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sensen are squat-legged, but can propel themselves quickly across ice using their entire body as a a paddle, wagging from the tip of their wedge-shaped head to the end of their long and powerful tails. They range from four to six feet long, and are typically 1-2 feet tall when on all fours. Most are shades of grey and blue.
Genetics and Reproduction
Sensen give birth to live offspring, and a typical "parent" will give birth to one young sensen per year. Ability to give birth is seemingly not tied to gender, and either of the parent couple can become pregnant. Some claim that it is possible for both parents to become pregnant form the same mating session, but this is yet to be proven.
Growth Rate & Stages
A sensen offspring will remain with its parents for the first eight years of its life, as it slowly grows. They start contributing to the family, feedind and nurturing their younger siblings, after the first two years of life. This long growth period means that sensen families are large and often seen together.
Ecology and Habitats
Despite common belief, Sensen cannot swim. This is unfortunate for them, as they live dangerously close to the water.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Sensen eat fish, drilling holes in ice and patiently fishing fish from the waters using their head.
Additional Information
Domestication
Only the Nisse "Snow Goblins" have ever been successful in taming Sensen, though this is mostly due to the species' religious significance to the native people of northern Khilland, and has little to do with the Sensen's actual ability to be domesticated.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The Nisse "Snow Goblins" are known to raise and ride large Sensen as mounts.
Facial characteristics
Fish-eating predators, Sensen have two forward-facing eyes. Their wedge-shaped faces help them crack ice to
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Nothing extrasensory is known of the Sensen, though ancient Perrot stories could imply their ability to sense disturbances through ice vibrations. Their eyesight is known to be fair, and their hearing is poor.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Light blues, purples, and greys are common, while a few have been found to be shades of green and red. Older Sensen have stronger tints than younger.
