"A Song of Spite", Spite's Playlist

vertigo: alice merton

“gotta get out of my head / do something that i’ll regret.”
Spite’s paranoia. She doesn’t know what to do next, she’s running out of time and options, and someone else holds all the cards. it’s driving her insane, and it might be time to make some rash decisions.

honey: luna aura

“my honey’s only sweet if you can take the sting”
Mostly for vibes, it very much feels like Spite challenges anyone who thinks they could knock her down. Most people think she’s all bark and no bite, but they’d be sorely mistaken.

mercy: king mala

“i’m beggin’ mercy / is there any good inside of me? / losin’ sense of my morality.”
Realizing that she’s hurt a lot of people, and formed a lot of bad habits. She’s burnt all of the bridges before they were ever built, and now she wants to fix it- she’s begging for mercy, even if she doesn’t deserve it.

show & tell: melanie martinez

“buy and sell / like i’m a product of society”
To her father, Spite was a commodity, something to be bargained for further gain. She’ll never forgive him for it. The feeling of eyes watching her, as if she were something to be collected, still haunts her.

primadonna: marina

“i know i’ve got a big ego / i really don’t know why it’s such a big deal though” “going up- going down down down / anything for the crown…”
She acts like she’s untouchable- invincible because of her attitude, but in reality she’s afraid of what happens when she falls off of the tower of aloofness she’s put herself on.

van horn: saint motel

“so tell me do you hate me, or do you wanna date me?”
Spite teasing someone after she's pissed them off. She enjoys egging people on, just to see how far she can drive them. After all, if they can’t stop thinking about her, she’s won.

these boots are made for walking: nancy sinatra

“you keep playing, where you shouldn’t be playing / and you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burned, ha! / i just found me a brand new box of matches / and what he knows you ain’t had time to learn”
Spite’s willing to walk out at the slightest sign that someone is going to use her, and as her fighting back against people prying into her business. This line in particular shows her resistance to anyone prying into her personal affairs.

maneater: nelly furtado

“And when she walks, she walks with passion / When she talks, she talks like she can handle it” “You wish you never ever met her at all”
Spite energy. She carries this air of infamy into every room. She knows people don’t view her positively, but there’s power in that. she feels untouchable when she puts on that mask.

drama: ajr

“recently he said that she said that we said some shit that you wouldn’t believe/ recently he said that she said that we said that he said some shit about me / so we’re caught up in drama”
Back to a younger spite, one who was realizing that all of her ‘friends’ and the people around her were spreading rumors and creating drama for the fun of it. Needless to say, she wasn’t a fan.

just a girl: no doubt

“Oh, I'm just a girl, guess I'm some kind of freak / 'Cause they all sit and stare with their eyes Oh, I'm just a girl, take a good look at me / Just your typical prototype / Oh, I've had it up to here”
Making fun of the society she grew up in. Girls were meant to be delicate and soft, to look pretty and sing prettier. She hated it, but she’s just a girl after all, what could she even do about it?

bad reputation: joan jett & the blackhearts

“A girl can do what she wants to do and that's what I'm gonna do / An' I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation”
Throwback to when Spite began acting out as a teenager. She realized that people were going to try and bring her down regardless of how well behaved she was, so she gave up and started being awful. This has continued to the present, as she revels in her bad reputation.

anklebiters: paramore

“Someday you're gonna be / The only one you've got / Why you wanna please the world / And leave yourself to drop dead?”
Spite refuses to rely on anyone but herself: everyone will leave or disappoint you eventually. This song shows her resistance to attachment and refusal to conform to the role she was given. It also shows her disdain for the way that high society will strip you of your personality, only for social gain.

yes & no: xylø

“I'll pull you closer in to me / And I'm pushing you away / 'Cause I'm like yes and no / Wait, I don't know”
Spite often pulls people in, then pushes them away with the very next sentence. No one ever gets close enough to predict what she’s going to do next. She does this on purpose, as the frustration it causes others keeps them from trying to get any closer than she lets them.

looking at me: sabrina carpenter

“Don't you bring any bull in the room tonight, it's a whole new rodeo / It could be you and me, but you know that I'll steal the show”
The front that spite puts up: overconfident, uncaring, and utterly self-obsessed.

seventeen: ladytron

“They only want you when you're seventeen, / When you're 21, you're no fun. They take a Polaroid and let you go / Say they'll let you know, so come on.”
Everyone loved young Melody, but then as she grew and changed, motives appeared, and genuine relationships disappeared. She wasn’t a person, she was a commodity.

the love club: lorde

“I'm in a clique, but I want out / It's not the same as when I was punched / In the old days, there was enough / The card games and ease, with the bitter salt of blood”
Thinking about the party versus her old group of friends. With the party, she’s in the thick of it, and part of her wants out immediately, but there’s something about them that makes her want to stay. She doesn’t understand why, or how, but she doesn’t feel so alone here, and she feels like they’d welcome her back if she left. Her friends back home were always fighting for attention and invites, and if she couldn’t provide, they wanted nothing to do with her. It’s making her think about things that she’d rather now think about.

too close: sir chloe

“Fragile like I've never seen / You're pretty when you do not speak”
“Don't tell me to listen / When you got nothing to say” Spite’s view on all of the people who tried to get close to her romantically when she was still at home. It was all shallow and frivolous to her, she wanted no part of it.

punchin bag: cage the elephant

“If you take a swing, she swing back / She say, I'm not your punchin' bag”
Fed up with taking blows to her confidence from her family. Now instead of taking the blows, she gives them to anyone who dares look at her wrong. Is it in self defense, or from years of suppressed rage? Even spite doesn’t know.

dead to me: kali uchis

“See, you think you got problems with me? / But, baby, I don't even think about you / You're mad at everything I do / But, what are you up to? I haven't a clue”
Spite cuts people off easily, she’s done it for so many years it’s basically second nature. That being said, once you’ve wronged spite, you’ll never get the chance to do it again. She is not forgiving, and she’ll certainly never forget what you’ve done.

circus: brittany spears

“I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins / Spotlight on me and I'm ready to break”
A hype song for Spite, or it would be fight montage music.

girls: marina

“Girls are not meant to fight dirty / Never look a day past thirty / Not gonna bend over and curtsey for you”
Spite’s “I’m not like other girls” song. It shows her distaste for how she and all other young women were expected to act in her hometown. She refuses to stay in that tiny little box and participate in the inane drama and pettiness that comes with it. Unfortunately, this mentality often comes across as disdain for everyone other than herself.

tales of dominica: lil nas x

“Oh, finally grown, ain't nothing like I hoped it would be / Out on my own, I'm floating in an ocean-less sea / Could I be wrong? Was everybody right about me?”
Spite didn’t think she’d grow up to live like she’s living now. She’s so full of rage, grief, and fear… and now she’s living completely on her own on a bet, and she can’t even go home. She has nothing, no one, and nowhere to go.

my name isn’t katherine: k flay

“Yeah, my name is a shadow / It wrapped itself around me just like a lasso / Followed me from NYC, out to Glasgow”
“Said you can't escape / Licking the envelope, sealing my fate” Spite’s ‘fall from grace’ in her parents eyes. She went from being their perfect golden child to being a terror in her own right and acting out whenever she could. On spite’s side, this explains how she feels more and more trapped by the name Melody, her name, and everything that came with it.

fan behavior: isaac dunbar

“Hey, I just wanna say "hey" to let you know you’re blow / And all you did was feed my ego”
Vibes only: Spite’s demeanor and philosophy of “If you hate me so much, take my name out of your mouth… or I might just assume you’re obsessed with me.”

venus fly trap: marina

“I sacrificed it all for a life to call mine / All the love and security to be myself”
“Why be a quiet little housewife when you could own the whole damn city?” Spite knows that her family sees her as only a marriage prospect, but she’s got so much more that she’s capable of, and she’s gonna show them all no matter what she has to do.

oh no!: marina

“One track mind, one track heart / If I fail, I'll fall apart / Maybe it is all a test / 'Cause, I feel like I'm the worst / So I always act like I'm the best”
Spite doesn’t want to be attached to anyone: she’s only looking out for herself and her future. She knows exactly what she wants, and what she’s going to do to get it, but if things don’t work out, she’s going to lose everything. Even if she does succeed, is she going to like who she’s become at the end of it all?

transparent soul: willow

“I don't fucking know if it's a lie or it's a fact / All your little fake friends will sell your secrets for some cash”
Spite definitely thinks that she sees right through everyone she comes across. She's constantly seeing the worst in others, and assuming their motives based on what she’s experienced in the past. This includes the party: she assumes that they’re all looking to gain something from her- why else would they be nice?

greek god: conan gray

“You're just gonna be a fraud / Oh, with nothin' but fickle friends” “I don't mind when you play with my head / I flip around, play with yours instead”
Talking down to all of her former friends, telling them that they’re fake and she wants nothing to do with them while simultaneously trying to put herself above all of that behavior, even though she engages in some of it as a way to keep others out.

vegas lights: panic at the disco

“ain’t it so, ain’t it so perfect? / our cynical minds will make it totally worth it / so give it to me now / we’re lost in a dream now.”
It’s so tempting to want to forget about everything weighing on her shoulders, and going out to party until she can’t remember her own name seems like a damn good way to do that. It’s addicting, it’s fun, and there are no expectations- but what’s the cost?

miracle man: oliver tree

“Tell me what you want was that enough for you? / Fucking up your life was that enough for you?”
Every person in Spite’s life saying these words to her over and over, making her feel guilty for the choices she’s made. Eventually, this would include the party too.

social climb: idkhow

“Different defections, cut the lines / Leagues of social climbers all about”
Spite mocking those who she watched either tried to become friends with powerful people for more influence, or those who abused others and kept them down to feel more powerful. She can confidently say she was never a social climber that way, but she certainly knew many of both types.

onion boy: isaac dunbar

“So sweetly, add a little flavor / Then hit with your crocodile tears for fun”
Spite’s a great actress. She uses her emotions to her advantage, and she does it well. She’s vengeful, and no one ever sees her coming until it’s too late. Overall, this is more of a vibes song, but it’s still fun.

cure for me: aurora

“I run from the liars, the fuel on the fire / I know I created myself / I know I can't fight the sad days and bad nights / But I never asked for your help”
Spite beginning to realize that her poor attitude and less than cooperative actions with the crew aren’t justified. Yet, she’s so stuck in her way that she blames the world for the outcome instead of taking responsibility. She doesn’t need to change, they just need to accept how she is. Also, Spite speaking to her family. she doesn’t need to change herself for them, or anyone for that matter. Their incessant pressure to conform only drives her further away, and more solidly into the mindset that she’s completely in the right.

this is love: air traffic controller

“I was good but then I quit / Everyone that tried to fix me / Knows that I can't change a bit / I've got no shame, got no pride / Only skeletons to hide”
Spite’s got a very cynical view on love, she’s only seen transactions that resemble relationships. Because of this, she’s adopted a philosophy of hurting others before they hurt her. The world is cruel- so why shouldn’t she be too?

power: bastille

“Did you really think I'd fall to my knees / Just to pray for some sweet simplicity?” “If you're gonna hit me, hit me harder / 'Cause you better knock me out the first time”
Spite starts to realize that she’s let her father hold power over her for so long that she’s forgotten that she’s the only one who can control herself…she doesn’t understand how she let that happen.

snakes: pvris

“You’re a snake / You’re a snake / I can see it in your face.” “Do you feel no shame? / Can’t you see my rage?”
The fight with The Interrogator. Spite hates people who hold power and use it to do horrible things while pretending to be good. At least own up to being a snake if you are one.

candy coated lie$: hot milk

“Just about to break, I can't stand the taste of / Candy coated lies, these candy coated lies / Every day the same, driving me insane”
Spite’s lies starting to choke her, she wants everyone to stay away so she can start over. Alternatively, this is her revelation that she can’t continue living in high society and pretending she doesn’t see the lies it’s run by.

hero: alice merton

“Taking my all, you were drowning us dead / 'Cause ever since the fall you've been hidin' what you meant”
As she grows with the crew, Spite realizes all of the mistakes that she’s made, and that she’s the villain of her own story. Sometimes she wishes she could go back and save herself, other times she wishes she could drink until she forgets what she’s done.

goldwing: billie eilish

“They're gonna tell you what you wanna hear / Then they're gonna disappear / Gonna claim you like a souvenir / Just to sell you in a year”
High society isn’t all that it’s chalked up to be, Spite knows this better than anyone. Beneath all of the glitter and gold, there are people who will tear you apart for their own gain and feel no remorse. The people there have a way with words, they’ll make you feel safe and then sell your secrets in a second.

you don’t know me: victorious

“You think you own me / But you can't control me / You look at me and there's just one thing that you see” “And the longer that you stay / The ice is melting / And the pain feels okay”
iIsee the beginning of this song as spite’s relationship with her father, and everyone from her home. They’ve tried time and time again to make her into what they think is best, and she’ll push back no matter what. In the second half of the song, iIsee spite slowly warming up to the party, and being so afraid of what that implies.

farewell wanderlust: the amazing devil
“So long to the person you begged me to be / She's down, she's dead / Instead what is left but this old satin dress / And the mess that you left / When you told me that I wasn't right in the head”
Spite and Sly screaming at the world for wronging them and killing the children they once were. They’ve had everything ripped from them, and they’re angry.

people i don’t like: upsahl

“Everybody in this party’s fucking fake / I really wish that I could say it to your face / But I won't, so”
Spite in any uppity party: she’ll play the part, but she’ll hate it all the same. She doesn’t want to be here socializing with people who are only looking to talk themselves up or make deals without her input.

seize the power: yonaka

“I looked in the mirror, I'm different, I finally made a decision / All the rejected that lost a lack of respect in / Themselves 'cause people get hectic / They hurt you and make you feel helpless”
A "bad bitch" song for Spite. This is her taking her own power back, for better or worse. Finally bringing her bet to her father, she’s far too confident and eager to prove him wrong.

seventeen: marina

“Oh, you are embarrassed of me / ‘Cos I use my tongue freely / Bet you wish I couldn't speak “No I'm not your little slave / No I don't twist and turn that way”
A montage of moments in spite’s life, all leading up to how she’s adopted the personality she has now. being approached by friends, only to find that they’re trying to court her. being scolded by her family for acting out. growing older and finding that her only purpose is to be someone’s wife. all of these things became more apparent as spite grew older, slowly becoming too much to bear.

enemy: imagine dragons

“Your words up on the wall as you're praying for my fall / And the laughter in the halls and the names that I've been called / I stack it in my mind and I'm waiting for the time / When I show you what it's like to be words spit in a mic”
If Spite makes herself unbearable, she’ll only have enemies, and that’s fine by her. At least she knows what they’re saying about her this way.

no questions: pham

“Cause you mean no sorry / So answer no questions”
When she and Sly first met and started working together. They both knew they were running, but they didn’t care to share why, or ask about the other, thus- their “don’t ask questions” contract was born.
