The Legend of the Chain Warden

Credit to Mark
He is known by many names. The Chain Warden, The Caller of the Drowned, The Revenge of the Deep. A monster of death and destruction. The legend encompasses many names, yet none know much about him.
- James "Sailoreen" Howlett.

Historical Basis

Rumors of the Chain Warden started popping up once the Warden was first spotted in the early days of the settlement. A mysterious figure would appear on the shoreline, waiting motionless. The colony would soon learn that this was a creature that could not be reasoned with - it was a monster that dragged all into the murky blue depths.   Many sightings have been confirmed since, though it doesn't appear to be capable of being in two places at once. No one knows where it came from or where it drags its victims.

Spread

The Chain warden is primarily known to the nations around Carracosta. It seems his reach extends only so far. Any attempts to make the warden stray further have failed.

Variations & Mutation

Due to the Warden's tendency to wait by the shoreline patiently, he lends himself to be quite a good subject for art. As such, several statues and paintings of the creature exist. Artistic interpretation has influenced the way he is known. Some varieties have chains wrapped around him, whilst others depict him with one scorpion stringer-like chain sticking out of his back.

In Literature

Many works have speculated on how the Warden came into existence, a lot of wizards have made the assumption that the Chain Warden is some variation of a Chain Devil being captured and locked into a powerfully magical device transforming him into the Chain Warden.

In Art

The legend of the Chain Warden is a popular one among sailors of any kind. Some sing tales of mermaids dragging them under, others about the mighty Kraken. The legend has inspired songs to keep children away from the ocean (Song of Chains). Some dared to call the warden out to paint or sculpt it and as such it is widely known how it looks yet none know how to make it permanently disappear.
