Saint Arterie

"The high priests were loath to grant her sainthood, even under direct instruction from the gods. First she *butchers* one of the sacred beasts as if it were common fodder. Then she names the resulting monstrosity after a foreign god. She truly earned the nickname of Heretic Saint. So much, in fact, that it seemed she was deliberately trying to make a point."
Hero of the Fourth Wasteland-Eidel War, single-handedly responsible for ending it by challenging the Wastelands' warlord to single combat.   Famous for her massive spindle companion- a titanic thing capable of wrestling elephant spiders and elder ogres.

Legacy

It's almost a shame how she's remembered for winning a single duel.   In the frantic search to revive ("fix", in her words) her parents, Arterie broke so much ground in the field of alchemy- particularly its medical applications. A significant portion of this was due to her tendency to experiment on herself, using her natural xiphaem skill as a diagnostics suite far superior to anything more traditional alchemists could hope to achieve. After all, her talent with the magic was so great that it warranted divine intervention and a Sainthood. Unfortunately, much of her research was only unearthed posthumously, at which point she'd already cemented her legacy as a legendary warrior. Among learned alchemists, her name gained a significantly different connotation, but the general populace's vision of her shifted little.

"Heretic Saint"

Her story is quite romanticized throughout the empire, emphasizing her loneliness and feats in service of the empire while glossing over the implications of her ascent. Her self-sacrifice is rather overblown.   She's a very 'safe' loose-cannon figure in that she doesn't really do anything truly problematic to the government beyond the initial arcahecide. For all the irreverence and disregard for authority, she could actually be considered relatively tame by the standards of most combat alchemists, who essentially have to exist outside the standard chain of command in order to be effectively utilized. In fact, some Eideli historians have argued that her image as uncontrollable actually led to an overall decrease in insubordination, as it set a new ceiling for culturally acceptable behavior in the military for future generations that grew up with her legend.   While sometimes jokingly referred to as such, the title of Heretic Saint only truly gained prominence posthumously. While the cultural shift has been noted by many Eideli historians, few recognize the deliberate intent behind it; the cultural goalpost shifting wasn't merely some happy accident. Rather, it was a deliberate move by the Three Temples intended for the betterment of the Eideli civilization. All in all, it could be considered a success.
