That's a very original way to kill! I love how you've justified the how this mechanism work :D Sounds plausible enough! Is there a reason for the tree to have the fruits since it doesn't use them for reproduction? I'm guessing it's to attract prey but you haven't said so explicitly. What do they contain inside if it's not food for the developing seedling?
If I recall correctly I had planned for the fruits to contain the gas released during the digestion process of the trees victims, which the tree could use to further dilute the atmosphere around it but I didn't have the space to fit it in...well so now it probably is more likely that these "fruits" are just mere remnant from the time when the maple wasn't horribly altered by the Second Spring.
