The Duke is dead.
With the last remaining member of House Amarand having legally disinherited himself, the small Nation of Fremilan finds itself facing a succession crisis it must resolve quickly. If the Duke's throne stays empty too long, the Nation will look weak and might be annexed by the neighbouring Armidian Empire. Likewise the appearance of instability and weakness may encourag brigands, bandits and all manner of wandering marauders to try and slice off a piece for themselves. Worst of all, no one really wants to descend into civil war. The Earls of the Nation agree, one of them must ascend to the throne, but for once in the Nation's proud history, the people will get a say on whom it shall be.
